'AN EXCITING WAR-DRAMA IN WHICH BOTH 'BURTON' AND 'EASTWOOD' EXCELLED'
on 16 March 2014
The film adapted from an 'Allister Mclean' adventure tale.
A team of seven are assembled by 'British' H.Q. to rescue an American General
being held at a remote castle in mountainous terrain, unbeknown to the majority
of the team, things are not quite as they seem.
The team are told they have to mount an operation to get to 'General Carnaby'
before he discloses military secrets, or in this case who he really is.
The team assembled are led by 'Major Smith' (Richard Burton) along with U.S
Lieutenant Shaffer' (Clint Eastwood) every member of the team speak fluent
The team are parachuted into the target region, one of the team found to be dead
after landing, it is at an early stage obvious that his death is no accident.
The Castle and it's surrounds are well fortified with a heavy German troop presence,
the chances of success seem slim.
When reaching the town below the Castle, a second team member is killed, is there
an undercover agent among them ?
The Germans seem to be one step ahead as the remaining members of the team
are captured, however 'Lieutenant Shaffer' and 'Major Smith' escape to continue
the mission with the help of agent 'Mary Ellison' who has infiltrated the Castle
This a well crafted and exciting adventure with plenty of explosive action along the way.
Picture Quality is superior to it's DVD version however is a little grainy, the sound quality
Well worth a re-visit or indeed a first viewing.
Film ( 1968 ) 155 minutes.
