Product Description

CD Description

* Considered the premier U.K. soul band of the `80s and on to the `90s, Loose Ends was formed in 1981 with an original line-up of Carl McIntosh, Steve Nichol and Jane Eugene.

* The original 1985 UK album of SO WHERE ARE YOU? reached No. 13 on the pop charts with the club classic `Hanging On A String (Contemplating)' also reaching No. 13 on the singles chart, also topping the US R&B chart as a key cut on the US version of the group's debut LP, A LITTLE SPICE (reissued on SMCR 5034 by SoulMusic.com Records in November 2011). Two further singles, `Magic Touch' and a cover of David Bowie's `Golden Years' were also UK chart makers. Tracks from SO WHERE ARE YOU? were used for the group's third US release "Zagora."

* Like its processor, SO WHERE ARE YOU? was produced by Philadelphia-based Nick Martinelli and includes key cuts - such as the classic track `You Can't Stop The Rain' - were written by the trio.

* This original UK version of SO WHERE ARE YOU? has been out of print on CD for many years. This great expanded edition co-produced by renowned US reissue producer Donald Cleveland and SoulMusic.com's David Nathan - includes five mixes of tracks from the LP including two more versions of the classic Hangin' On A String.

This is the UK soul trio's second lp from 1985 (No 13 UK LP Charts) given the expanded treatment and it's a must buy.
American producer Nick Martinelli smoothed off the rough edges of the 1984 debut ('A little Spice' also reissued By Cherry Red)to produce a smooth slick sound echoing the then contemporary 'Hot Tempo'(around 110 BPM);key records being 'Just Be Good To Me (SOS Band),Ain't Nobody (Rufus & Chaka Khan)and the template for them all ,Don't Stop The Music (Yarbrough & Peoples).
Apart from a cover of Bowie's 'Golden Years' (UK No59 single) and Dexter Wansel's 'The Sweetest Pain',the remainder of the tracks were self composed by the trio, including the bona fida classic 'Hangin' On A String (A number 13 UK Hit)and 'Magic Touch (No 16).
With excellent sleeve notes and great bonus tracks (A Timmy Regisford remix of 'You Can't Stop the Rain (my personal fave from the lp is a must-hear)SOUL MUSIC.COM serve up another brilliant release.

Ok so i'm 42 and have a lot of nostalgia for this group, however i think this stands the test of time very well indeed.
I totally disagree with the last reviewer as Loose Ends are true quality IMO. Nick Martinelli is a strong producer and Jane's voice is beautifully soulful. I actually love the mid-80's synth sound -my favourite era in music basically and "hot tempo" lives up to its name still.
The singles "Magic Touch" & "Hangin' On A String" in particular are brilliant.
Not as good an album as their meisterwork "Zagora", but definitely work getting.

A lot of people are under the belief that this was Loose Ends First album....those that had the pleasure of taking a chance with "A little Spice" found it was a very accomplished debut, merging the talents of Peckams finest trio with the prodcution skills of the American Nick Martinelli...

Now there may be some relevance to the sound that came through at the time from Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, legendary producers for the likes of the S.O.S. Band, Alexander O' Neal, Cherrelle, Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson and the Human League (yes, that last one was correct). This homage was created in the lead track "Hanging on a String". Note I said homage, not duplication. That track was the song of the summer in 1985 and made the Loose Ends the first British black group to have a number one single in the American R & B chart.

Even today, the album sounds fresh and fresh and unique. Real musicians, real lyrics and real atmosphere.

So to the R & B artists of today, take note. This is how it should be done!
