Product Description

Product Description

The fifth title in Process's Self-Reliance series demystifies medical practices with a practical approach to 21st century health and home medicine, particularly helpful in times of extreme stress, such as the current economic downturn. Smartly designed and full of practical medical tips for emergency situations, When There Is No Doctor should be no further than an arm's reach away in times when public spending is facing severe cuts and people are having to rely more and more on their own personal resources.

Dont Bother 8 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I had put this item on my wish list and recieved it for Xmas. I thought it was going south within 100 pages but read the whole thing just for completeness before writing this review.

I will start by saying this book does not contain any useful information on what to do when there is not doctor around. Sure it covers in a wishy washy format what is important should society have a melt down and require the disposal of bodies but other than that it full of anicdotal stories about barefoot doctors of all things and not much practical instruction.

A couple of quite troubling things included a broadbrush on peak oil at the start to set the scene for the book followed by peices of information included using bread as a tempory filings and a reference to canabilism during the irish potato famine (which i dont think is true).

I am from the UK and therefore information like volunteer for FEMA camp duties to get medical training is no good for me, and to be honest in my opinion not much use to the intended audience either.

dont bother with this book.

Not what I needed 23 Mar 2012
By Ekij
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought that "Where there is no doctor" was a book about "What to do if you find yourself in a situation where there is no doctor". Unfortunately it's actually about "All the possible reasons why you might find yourself in a situation where there is no doctor".
In other words it's a book written to convince you that you need to buy the book you though it was in the first place, while not being that book!

I struggle to imagine anyone finding this book useful. If you are the sort of person who is going to go away from established medical help and it's already occurred to you to buy a book about it you've already realised the need for a bit of medical training. You don't need a whole book that just says things like "perhaps you should take a first aid course".

Very disappointed.

Useful and unusual 28 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This book does have useful advice, however, it does not replace a doctor, and some of the advice is peculiar. I would take it with advisement, because one piece of advice is to eat a cigarette to kill intestinal worms! Sounds dangerous to me. But there is a lot of warnings of what to do and what not to do, and also a lot of encouragement to train in first aid. If you want a reference guide for how to heal yourself, this is not a good book. If you want a book to motivate you to train in first aid, or a guide on having a comprehensive first aid kit at home, this can help you.
