Product Description

Being an entrepreneur involves taking risks and Elizabeth Wilks has taken more than most. Riding the initial wave of the dot.com boom in the UK was a brave and foolhardy venture, but for one woman the dream of taking a company to the stock market was a driving passion. From the modest start of a two person home-based business turning a reasonable profit, to the exciting challenge of running teams of people, fundraising, and the highs of 'live' presentations, everything was going to plan. But soon after a successful flotation, the euphoria quickly faded and she found herself having to cope with office politics, looming product deadlines, factional board meetings, the stress of dwindling bank accounts and widening cracks in her personal relationships. This is a valiant account of surviving overwhelming challenges and the regaining of a fighting spirit!

This book describes the career of Elizabeth from her desire to run a listed company through to her actually doing so, and all the trials, tribulations and boardroom struggles along the way.

It contains a whole heap of interesting, instructive and humorous lessons into what to do to get your company successful, it reinforces the idea that you need a strong, able team around you that you can trust.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone working for a small or medium sized software house, or indeed anyone about to make the leap and go it alone.

This book gives reader an opportunity to accompany the author on an entrepreneurial journey, which spans over twelve years and transforms the author from an aspiring entrepreneur into a seasoned executive. The story tells about the passion to pursue a dream, the joy of building a business from scratch and driving it towards IPO, the bloody boardroom battles, the pain of closing the company down, and the power of learning from the experience.

It is a very personal account of the real events from both professional and personal perspectives, which gives the book a strong sense of credibility. As I read the book I realised how much energy and drive one has to have to be an entrepreneur, as well as how much it is about knowing yourself and choosing the right people to go along with. Elizabeth put a lot of effort in reflecting upon her experiences and the resulting work is humble, honest, and interesting reading.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone considering starting a business or working with start-ups.

What dot com was really like 28 Jan 2012
By Good Business - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I've really enjoyed this book as it vividly took me back through the whole dot com experience, and expresses how hard it is to get a startup going. It is very much a personal journey of growth as much as business insights. The categorisations of the types of people that want to get involved in startups - and the positives and negatives they can bring is eminently useful - and immediately applicable.

It is also a really entertaining story, hard to put down!

Well worth grabbing hold off...
The Entrepreneurial Rollercoaster 26 Sep 2011
By peterj - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A great story about an entrepreneur's taking of risk and her committment to building a high technology company during the late 90s dotcom boom. Elizabth is not your sterotype entrepreneur, but a divorced mother of teenage children with a dream to create her own company and control her destiny. The book presents a very honest account of the challenges, successes and failures involved in establishing a technology company and taking it to the stock market; including the deterimental impact due to the culture transformation as the company moved from dynamic startup to an over resourced listed company. I often come across books that present an embellished success story and that do not highlight the failures and lessions learnt, Elizabeth's book is different. The is an open, honest and ego free account and therefore a useful text for any entrepreneur. A terrific read.
A good honest read of the no so happy side of enterprenuership 6 Sep 2011
By Leo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I learnt a lot from this. It is a very personal story of a heroic and brave effort to achieve the dream of a successful public UK public company through the period of the dot.bom. For me personally it was also reassuring to see that what I have experienced in my efforts at a similar dream, albeit on the opposite side of the world, are not unusual. In fact I found it vaguely reassuring to see that I have been let off quite leniently by comparison. The story never got boring. The characters, the bad luck, the worry, stress and joy of the ride are concisely and tightly conveyed. I didn't put it down until I finished it. It was very personal and that made it quite refreshing and very different from most of the dry business analysis usually written about business. This in no way takes away from the very valuable lessons this book conveys about the pitfalls, traps and hurdles related to time, environments, and people that all have to be overcome in order to succeed at a start up and to continue on transitioning through all the phases of company building. This book is a "must read" for any budding company builder. It will pay dividends especially if it helps recognise anyone the naivety in most of us when we start a quest like this and helps us better seek wise council of trusted and experienced elders that are essential to success.
