Book Description

When You Were Mine is a prequel NOVELLA of Always Been Mine. Approximately 49k words long. Giving you a more in depth look into the beginning of Alex and Valerie's tumultuous relationship before their full length novel. Also enjoy a very early excerpt of Felix (5th Street #5) coming November 13th 2014.

When her head was screaming “enough,” her hopeful heart continued to whisper “wait.”

It's the only way Valerie Zuniga can justify her ongoing addiction to the amazing but ever, elusive Alex Moreno. Mesmerized by the profound connection neither has ever quite understood, Valerie accepts their crazy relationship for what it is—non-exclusive.

That is until the incredible highs no longer numb the sting of the intense lows.

As tasteless and slippery as pride can be, for Alex it's always been the hardest pill to swallow.

Faced with a final ultimatum, the choice is a no-brainer for Alex. Despite his insanely busy life he's determined to prove to Valerie, that not only is he ready to commit, it's what he's always wanted—to claim Valerie as his exclusively.

But just as it kept him from admitting his real feelings all those years, will his obstinate pride once again step in and ruin things just when they're finally getting it right?

More About the Author

Writing is my passion. It hasn't always been. I began writing in high school mostly just for fun. I never once took it seriously or had aspirations of becoming a published writer.

I began writing Forever Mine in the 10th grade. I'd forgotten all about it until many MANY years later after moving into a new home, I began to unpack a box that had been sitting in my old houses garage closet. After unpacking old year books and school photos I'd long ago thought were lost forever. I came across an envelope with about seven chapters worth of Forever Mine. I became engrossed in the romance I'd forgotten all about. When I got to the last page I'd written I was so dissapointed because I REALLY wanted to know what happend next.

I decided to finish it. It has been one of the most pleasurable experiences of my life. I felt like I was living their story and enjoyed every minute. When I was finally done I cried. I missed my characters so much I decided there would be more. After much tweaking and editing I wanted the world to read Forever Mine, so I self published. Now I'm hooked on writing.

The experience continues as I work on Always Been Mine the second in the series of The Moreno Brothers. I'm on a roller coaster again and loving every minute. I hope to have it out by early 2011, then I can get started on the the 3rd which the title has yet to come to me. I will, and when it does. I will update my bio. =)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Morenos!! 9 Aug. 2014
By SLM84
Format:Kindle Edition
I always enjoy Elizabeth Reyes books and was thrilled to find out she was doing a prequel to Alex and Valerie's story. Even though I enjoyed reading their original story, I remember feeling a little disappointed that their story started years later and we missed out on seeing Alex and Valerie at the beginning of their on/off relationship.

This story perfectly fills the gap and made me love the characters more. It gave us an insight in to what was going through their minds during the time. Several times I was thinking, "Dammit, Valerie and Alex!! Why couldn't you have been more honest with each other?!"

Even though I know how their overall story ends, I did feel quite sad for them and I desperately needed to read their other book to reassure myself they get their HEA.

I think this book is a perfect addition to the Moreno series and strengthens the series perfectly!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prequel Surpasses the Original!! 13 Aug. 2014
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
What are the odds that the prequel would be even better than the original work?! I LOVED reading about Alex and Valerie's early years. There was so much passion, angst, jealousy, insecurity and pride! And it felt real in the sense that these two characters behaved like their age, in essence, they were immature. But you could never doubt how in love they were. I hate reading about college aged people who speak and act like they're 40, it's just not authentic. Alex and Valerie are two young people who don't yet have a handle on their emotions and have trouble fully trusting eachother, and when two fiery personalities collide there's bound to be major fireworks. Valerie is such a great heroine, spunky and strong, yet knowing Alex is her only weakness and she's relatable b/c so many young women have been in her shoes. Alex is my favorite Moreno brother and he is such a perfect mix of sweet and alpha. I felt bad for all the stresses and issues he was dealing with and I felt equally bad for Valerie always getting the short end of the stick from him, it was well written and easy to see that there isn't always a good guy and a bad guy but sometimes the timing just isn't right or we have to grow up a little to be able to handle a mature relationship. I highly recommend When You Were Mine, Reyes delivers again.

5.0 out of 5 stars I had not read Always Been Mine... 19 Aug. 2014

I loved it...even though it was a cliffhanger which I normally despise. However, because I was aware that this was a prequel to Alex and Valerie's story and the fact that their full length story was already out, I bought this. And, I am also a Moreno's series fan having read both books about Angel and Sarah and then Sweet Sofie. This did not disappoint and I cannot imagine anyone else who is a fan of this series not absolutely loving the "inside scoop" of what Alex was all about....sigh...just loved him, even though his pride got in his way big time.
And, of course, really 'understanding' Valerie.

Honestly, just fabulous...and as soon as I was done, I went on to read "Always Been Mine" which also did not disappoint! Loved it too!

LOOOOVED it! Of course reading anything from Elizabeth Reyes always gets me super excited. Alex and Valerie story's is no different. It's a definite MUST read to get the inside of the story. Their roller coaster of relationship and emotions in this book is more detailed than their 1st book. The struggles of jealousy, stubbornness, GREAT sex and of course LOVE is what keeps them in a fantastic relationship. It's great book to a wonderful ending. MUST read Always Been Mine after this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars This one's for the fans 5 Sept. 2014

It's a novella so I'll try to keep my review short-ish. When You Were Mine is a prequel to Always Been Mine and it definitely ends with a major cliffhanger. So you will want to get these two at the same time and plan enough time to read them immediately after each other.

Honestly this novella feels more like it was written for the fans. As in to me it didn't feel absolutely necessary for Alex and Valerie's story, but as a fan of the series I enjoyed it immensely. In Always Been Mine we get a summary of what happened during college and now with When You Were Mine we get to read about it in detail.

While it was interesting and gave me more insight in Alex's reasons of his behaviour, I still think he's an idiot. Pride can be an ugly thing and it's clear Alex has a lot of it. It's pretty much that pride that makes him screw up time after time. There are other factors that influenced it all and I was surprised how much pressure he was constantly on, a lot of people were relying on him. At times I even felt like his family was taking advantage of him, of course Alex would never say anything about it, so it's kind of double edged.

Though it's not all Alex's fault, he and Valerie just weren't great at communicating, as in they were afraid that verbally announcing they wanted more would scare the other person away. They really are a lot alike, which on the one hand makes them very compatible and on the other hand is the reason why the clash so often. Their relationship consists of nothing but highs and lows and it did take me a bit by surprise how extreme this really was. It definitely helped me better understand Valerie's decision.

Both of them still need to do a lot of growing, before this could ever really work between them. I always believed in them and when you read Always Been Mine, I know you will get it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars ~ See where it all began then relive the magic! 1 Sept. 2014

Alex and Valerie are probably my second favorite couple in the Moreno series of books. Their on again off again relationship has been the cause of my palpitations having read their first book several times because I like I said...I'm a huge fan of this series. Even though I already knew the majority of what went down between them in their college years I was curious to get into Alex's head space and see exactly why he chose the route he did in regards to keeping his academic shortcomings to himself causing Valerie concern and unnecessary heartache.

If you haven';t read their book I insist that you do because not only is it amazing but these two have a spunky fire about them no matter if they are f****** or fighting. Alex is a giant teddy bear sweetheart most of the time but when it comes to seeing Valerie with anybody else he gets aggressive. Not in a bad way but just a "Stay away from my property" kind of possessive. I love him for it though. It's what keeps me in his corner because he's an idiot at heart and doesn't understand how a woman's mind works. That's OK though, We aren't meant to get each other apparently. SO Alex is doing poorly in school and in order to keep his scholarship and play football he has to have a tutor help him with his course work but chooses to hide the girls who help him from Valerie because this time in their on again cycle he really wants to prove to her he's changed. Of course fans of the series know exactly how he flubbed up when Valerie caught him in a lie and what transpired form there.

With Alex and Valerie being so young I understood the games they played back and forth to make the other jealous. Although I got it it still bothered me a little bit to see them rubbing other dates in their faces regardless if it was nothing more than surface aggravation. I loved Valerie tremendously and felt bad for her and I understood how hurt she was but I still cringed watching her try to make Alex jealous. Which by the way, wasn't too hard. Alex is one of my favorite Moreno's second ONLY to his brother Sal and I love this meat head. Usually it's the girl who is naive about the company she keeps until it gets her in trouble but this time it was Alex. His internal musings about the girls who helped him wearing tiny clothes around him and flirting constantly left me dumbstruck. It was honestly laughable how clueless he was. Even his statement "Was it his fault that Gwyneth had great legs and liked showing them off?" had me shaking my head because Valerie had just heard from friends that he was hanging out with a girl wearing booty shorts. Seriously dude, JUST SAY NO! I actually laughed at him for being so unaware. Guys have to know if they are seen with another girl she better be covered head to to for our peace of mind. Right ladies? LOL

NO matter what these two put each other through I still loved them and though this book made me sad at times and left me hanging with a pit in my stomach I know how things turned out and I can't be sad. I do however want to go snap their book up and relive all the sexy magic that was VALEX again by reading Always Been Mine. This one falls under my "Second Chance Romance" category even though this is technically their first second chance. Who's counting? You don't want to miss out on all the Latino goodness that Alex brings to the table in either book and Valerie's spunk should make chicks everywhere applaud her ball busting ways.
