Product Description

The storms of life visit us all, and at times we find ourselves ill-prepared to weather them. Where is God when everything comes crashing down? Where is he when a job is lost? When a child goes astray? When the diagnosis is cancer? Does he even care?

In When You Can't Find God, Linda Evans Shepherd shows readers how to see God in any circumstance, even when it's hard. Compassionate and practical, Shepherd offers strategies for surviving difficult times, giving your troubles to God, praying through the pain, and finding peace, hope, and joy once more. She also shows readers how to use their sorrows as a tool to draw nearer to God.

No one is exempt from pain and trials. But for those in the midst of them, there is hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure 28 Feb 2013

I couldn't drop this book once I opened it up and started reading. The author does an amazing job in helping us see those dry spiritual times from God's perspective. The prayers in the book are also heartfelt and powerful. I can't recommend this enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre 31 Aug 2012

Typically the advice in this book isn't BAD advice per se, but a thousand other Christian authors could fill their pages with this very basic stuff. I could probably come up with most of it. There doesn't seem to be much structure either - just a lot of uninspired words of advice, again and again and again. Im getting quite bored of it. I suppose it's meant to be written for a large audience, and maybe for people at the start of their walk with God, but I'm getting sick of the inanity of it. I have just read both 'The Reason for God', and 'Kings Cross' by Timothy Keller and I recommend both books - they were fantastic, and will likely help you increase your faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great study for a group or individually 2 Aug 2011
By Pamela Sonnenmoser - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
From the first page to the last, Shepherd's transparency and heart for the Lord is evident. She speaks directly to the heart of the reader in a tender, compassionate manner, leading us toward hope and peace in our lives. What I love the most about this book, is that Shepherd does not mollycoddle the reader. This is not just another feel-good book, although after reading it, I don't know how anyone could feel less than great about their walk with Jesus and their life in general.

She has a true gift of speaking the truth in love in her writing so that we are called to a place of responsibility for our actions and attitudes toward the Lord and other people. I love it that throughout this book there are practical tools and spiritual steps that, if followed, will lead us to a life where we are truly walking with God and leaning on His truth, rather than our own limited understanding of the world.

If you are looking for a great small group Bible study, this is it. A Bible study and discussion guide are already there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book! 31 May 2011

two 1/2 yrs ago, i became chronically ill, a single mom of a son and daughter in college. after working for 35 yrs, all my plans came to a halt, and my life and my kids' lives went topsy turvy! my kids had to take care of me! i was an emotional wreck. there are so many of us out there. enter, Linda Shepherd's book, When you don't know what to Pray. That book made a tremendous difference in my life, and now this second book i just read, When You Can't Find God, made another big difference in my life, both for the good! i am still very sick; however, i am emotionally better, i have a beautiful relationship with God. the author shares her own life experiences in a way that we can all relate too. she puts beautiful words to prayer, and i love the bible study/discussion questions portion of the book. you don't need a group, you can go thru these by yourself if you would like, as i am, to get even more out of this book. i recommend this book highly! i am re-reading it myself, and it has become a welcome addition to my bedside reading!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not That Inspired 5 Jun 2011
By Ashley Mott - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this volume to be uninspiring. The wisdom expressed by the author seems forced and spread thin throughout the course of the book. I was somewhat unimpressed from the first several lines of the first chapter where the author has a friend who wants to know whether or not she will always feel pain. The author relies on obtuseness and just tells her friend that she "cannot promise her a life without pain" despite the friend wanting to mainly know (as revealed in other dialogue) whether or not she will always feel the way she feels at that moment.

I found no groundbreaking expressions, no really inspired statements of faith in this book - only somewhat basic Bible based inspirational content.

I have read no other Linda Evans Shepherd books, and I don't think I will seek out any others - the words just don't resoundingly ring for me.
