More About the Author

Ever since I was a child I've loved nature and animals. I spent my time out of doors, picking flowers and scooping tadpoles out of ponds. So it's no wonder I studied biology and became an author myself of the kind of gifts I loved when I was young, books about nature. I've expanded into other fascinating areas of nonfiction, too, especially historical topics of the American west, such as Lewis and Clark and Native Americans.

The lives of wolves and dogs especially fascinate me. Scientists consider them the same species, but wolves are so successful at being wild, and dogs have done a great job of attaching themselves to humans in so many ways. My one fiction, "Return of the Wolf," now available in a Kindle edition, shows how wolves live in the wild. If you read this book, you'll recognize behavior your dog shares with its wild cousin, such as submissive or dominant behavior. "When the Wolves Return: Restoring Nature's Balance in Yellowstone" demonstrates the importance of wolves to the natural ecosystem, and several of my books explore how dogs help humans in different ways.

My work has given me the gift of travel to all sorts of fascinating places such as the Galapagos Island, the Costa Rican Rain Forest, the arctic tundra, and more. Since my favorite activity is learning new information, I plan to keep traveling and writing for many years ahead.

FIRR-Kids! Review 11 Nov. 2008
By www.firrkids.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Beavers, badgers and elk, oh my! You'll learn about Yellowstone National Park, and will also discover you have acquired a stunning collection of nature photographs. This father-daughter photography team resides on the border of the park, which really shines through in their work.

The author gives a brief explanation of Yellowstone as a national park before she launches into the history of the animals, which is the true focus of the book. She explains how Yellowstone has a very complex natural system, the circumstances that progressively occurred, and their effect on the animals. It's interesting to learn why one animal thrives, while another animal languishes.

The author does a good job giving the right amount of details - enough to be informative but not overly complicated. Younger readers can enjoy the animal and scenery photos, while older readers can easily follow the narration. If you have a nature lover, I would absolutely recommend this book.

Great Nonfiction book for kids 23 April 2010
By Angela - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book is great for younger readers, because it has a small text box in the corner of every other page that summarizes the main text on the page in simplified language. Older readers could use this text box to review what each page is about. Also, the photos are excellent! I'm definitely going to buy this book for my future students! (Studying elementary ed right now.)

My second grader was assigned wolves for his big Animals project for the year and he was really taken with this book. Even inspired him to write a poem. I haven't read it myself yet but the photos are lovely. He's read it numerous times now.
