Book Description

Alan Titchmarsh looks back to 1950s Britain to see what we can learn for our lives today

Product Description

In When I Was a Nipper Alan Titchmarsh goes on a personal and nostalgic journey through post-War Britain in search of treasured values and traditions that were once the soul of society. With characteristic wit, warmth and humour he draws on the experience of his own childhood, and also takes a broader perspective, creating a wonderfully detailed and evocative portrait of a way of life that is fast disappearing, and asks what can we learn from this era of austerity to make our lives better today?

Born in Yorkshire in 1949 and brought up in a Britain still recovering from the Second World War, Alan remembers a time of relative calm, when it was enough to return home at night knowing that the house would still be standing. We were known throughout the world for our patience, resourcefulness and resilience. 'Mustn't grumble' was almost a national catchphrase, and queuing was second nature. Peppered with wonderful archive photographs and advertisements, When I Was a Nipper takes us back to those days, down high streets and through farmyards, on to trolley buses and into local pubs.

As we move towards a global economy, as communities fragment and customs are lost, When I Was a Nipper captures a world that is fast receding into history. It's powerfully nostalgic for those who remember those days, but it's also Alan's timely call to all recession-hit Brits to heed the lessons of austerity Britain: 'make do and mend'; 'look on the bright side' and 'take the knocks on the chin'.

An enjoyable read 19 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is so enjoyable, just like having Alan Titchmarsh reading it to me. I don't think you have to be of a similar age to enjoy this book as it is written so graphically that anyone can be transported into his world and feel they could be experiencing the same things. I would definitely recommend 'When I Was a Nipper' for a comfortable, amusing read, a book to get lost in, to reminisce, to enjoy.

We had seen this advertised, and my husband, who doesn't particularly enjoy reading, said it looked really good. Alan Titchmarsh has written it brilliantly, and it is superbly illustrated with both family photos and other material from the late 1940s, through to the 1960s. My husband and I love this book. One of the teachers at the local school has expressed interest and I am lending it to her.

This is an enjoyable, easy read. For those aged fifty or over it will bring back many memories. For younger readers interested in England's recent social history it will show how much has changed in the last fifty or so years. It contains a large number of photographs, both personal to the author and more general. A must for Alan Titchmarsh fans.

Bought this for my husband for Christmas and was so glad I chose the hardback version. He loves it and it has lovely colour photographs from special things/times of the past.

Is Titch getting hard up?
I've enjoyed all the previous books, but this one was poor. It was written as if he was going through the motions, rather than enjoying the subject. Read more

Memory Lane
Great read. With so little between the age of the author and myself it was a real trip down memory lane. You forget so much and this brought a lot back into sharp detail.

Titchmarsh or an editorial team?
This book definitely has the feel of a collaborative effort, rather than Alan Titchmarsh being the sole author. Read more
