Product Description

Critically acclaimed English folk duo return with a surprisingly mature take on children's folk songs. In 2011 MEGSON took a break from music as they welcomed their little girl Lola Wren into the world. Unable to stay away too long they looked for a project that would combine their new roles as parents with their musical passions. 'WHEN I WAS A LAD' is the end result, an album of old and new children's folk songs. STU HANNA & DEBBIE HANNA are the husband & wife duo MEGSON. Three times nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and double winners of the 2011 Spiral Earth Awards they draw heavily on their Teesside heritage to create a unique brand of folk music. Their infectious sound is a mix of heavenly vocals, lush harmonies and driving rhythmic guitars and mandolas. As Froots Magazine puts it 'if you don't like the music here then you have a problem' 'Simply Brilliant' The Sunday Express Their last album 'THE LONGSHOT' had rave reviews from the national press with 4 Star **** reviews from MOJO, THE FINANCIAL TIMES, UNCUT, THE SUNDAY EXPRESS and THE GUARDIAN 'the most original duo on the folk scene'.

Megson's latest is billed as 'a collection of children's folk songs', but you don't have to be that young to enjoy this, just young hearted enough to revel in the contemporary flavoured traditional songs that are a real delight whatever your age. Stu and Debbie have worked their magic again, with a mix of up to the minute interpretations of some well known items such as Dance to your Daddy, and Frog he would a woo-ing go, and their own compositions of bang on relevant social comment with a great tune - try All the Shops have Fallen Down and resist singing it loudly next time you go past the council offices. Oh - and our 1 year old grandson loves it too. A generation bridging delight of an album.

Megson have produced a collection of old and new "children's" folk songs that is so superior to most of the rather twee interpretations normally bundled up for kids that you find yourself forgetting that it is supposed to be for kids! And that is absolutely as it should be - the quality of the music is such that it works on both levels so it will keep kids (of all ages:)) happy but is equally good as grown-up listening.
Buy this and you won't be disappointed. Go and see Megson live too if you can as they are also a fantastic live act. They even do a live version of the "When I was a Lad" CD aimed at little'uns - I haven't summoned up the courage to experience that yet!

I had high hopes of this CD having read a review in the press, seen them live and having two of their albums already. It's a delight; listened to it twice through at first play.

My two children, aged 3 and 1.5, received this CD for Christmas and they LOVE it. It lives in the car and as soon as they are in, they start clamouring for 'Bee-o Bee-o' which is conveniently the first track. They already know words to most of them and my eldest is constantly humming the tunes as she goes about her day.

Unlike most kids CDs we put in the car, we don't mind listening to it over and over because we like it almost as much as them!

Perfect for kids of all ages.

My daughter loves this. My wife loves this. I love this! If anyone is a folk lover who wishes to pass on the passion to future
generations then this is a great starting point. You will be singing all day!

This CD was typical of what Megson are capable. Having seen them live recently this CD does represent them well. They sang some of the numbers on this CD live exactly as they are on the CD. They are well worth seeing.
