This is an amazing anime with a great story line and lots of unexpected plot twists and not to mention a great soundtrack to boot. It is not however for the faint of heart as some of the sences in this anime can be quite gruesome and the rating of 15+ would probally be more suitable for this anime. Personally I recommend when you watch this anime to switch the lanuage to japanese with english subs as some the english dubs can be a bit confusing to some.

Higurashi/When they cry is certainly a very original thriller, and deserves a place amongst the anime classics.

But the "PG" rating shown by Amazon is wrong: this story is NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN! It is an extremely violent thriller. For some inexplicable reason vol.1 was rated PG13 in the US, but Vol.2 onwards are rated 16+. In the UK I do not believe it has been classified yet but would expect an 18 rating. In Japan it was broadcast in a midnight slot.

this dvd is easier to understand if you'd play the game but you could catch on after watching it a few times. This is a horror/ murder and thriller type show with crisp animation and an excellent storyline possible let down on the dubbing but i advise for you to hone your wit as there is a lot of confusing plot twists an all round excellent series

When They Cry vol 1 was very enjoyable to watch. The mix of dark humour, drama and mystery is what makes it so intersting. Definatly a good purchase.

Not that it's a bad thing anyway... most of the time.

Anyway, When they cry: Higurashi is a very interesting anime nethertheless. It might appeal fanservice to some, but it's certainly is not. It has no nude or panty shots as far as I'm aware and whilst it look cute, it certainly isn't light hearted.

People have complained there is blood, but I've yet to find any. But I've only watched 3 episodes so far and even though there is a slight feeling that it might turn out gory, I doubt it will excel into the likes of Elfen Lied or School Days.

The characters can range from likable to plain annoying. You have the girls who act cocky, you have a girl who is shy etc. But at some point, they do get creepy when they notice Keishii (Main character) is doing something behind their backs.

But nethertheless, it's a murder mystery and the five girls could be potential murderers... which might explain the axe wielding teenage loli.

So overall, it's a great start. And I hope the like of Manga, MVM or Revelation Film will pick it up. I will certainly watch more.

For those who don't know what Loli is, it's used as a slang phrase (or Japanese phrase?) in the anime fanbase for "children or teenagers". Most likely the latter. Don't confuse this with Lolicon. Lolicon is animated child porn and is frowned upon in the Japanese media. There are in talks of banning it (and good riddance as well).

And now you learn something new everyday ;)
