5.0 out of 5 stars First Love Not On The Rocks 28 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
Good to see a reissue of the May 1979 4th CBS album which I believe was the Sutherland Brothers eight album overall (excluding compilations) and final one before their 3 album solo projects in the 80's. This reissue has the three extra tracks of One More Night With You and Sunbird previously only available on single in the UK and a re-make of The Pie (When I Say I Love You) recorded in Los Angeles in 1978 and produced by Glen Spreen with the musicians including Ritchie Zito and Steve Porcaro from Toto in support. I believe these three extra tracks were on the US import of Down To Earth (UK issue was September 1977) produced by the fantastic ex-Shadows guitarist Bruce Welch and surely a must for future re-issue for all Sutherland Brothers music fans.

Gavin and Iain must be amazed that their compositions have not attracted more covers over the past twenty years as their music still sounds great in 2005. Although two of the tracks here including the magnificent Easy Come, Easy Go are available on their welcomed Sony greatest hits package, you still have First Love, As Long As I've Got You and On The Rocks as other CD highlights. Hopefully, someone somewhere will recognise one day the class of these songwriting brothers and with Where Lies Your Soul, Ice In The Fire, Somebody's Fool on Down To Earth still awaiting UK CD release, I hope 2006 sees at least another re-issue as my vinyl recording like my patience is wearing a bit thin.

On doing some research into the history of the band, I did discover the excellent Den Coultas on myspace, who was apparantly also signed to Skerry Rock at the time and fans should note the name, as the track Long Dusty Road plus several others would have been welcome on any SB+Q album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scottish Everlys 7 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like The Sutherland Brothers (+/- Quiver), this one is as good as the rest. I never saw it in a US record store at the time (1979), so it was not a big commercial success. The singing is great, as are the songs. Cheerful and soaring music- I can picture the sea and Scottish sky. "Easy Come, Easy Go" is a beautiful ballad, the title song is terrific, "Sunbird" is imaginative and pretty, as is "On the Rocks". Thanks to Acadia for reissuing this. If "Down to Earth" (1978) comes out on CD, that would make another of my days. These guys can sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 18 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD
The Sutherland Bros writing just kept getting better, and the LA session players flavor the songs as well as Quiver holdovers Willie Wilson and Tim Renwick on guitar, who also appear. The three songs added from Down To Earth are excellent too. I hope this doesn't mean that that fine album will not be released on CD. I believe it's the only Bros album not now on CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making A Great Album & Then Getting The Sack 1 Aug 2005
By a-dodger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"When The Night Comes Down" was as good as any of the Sutherland Bros. work on Columbia and it's a shame they were let go and not picked up by another label. Both Iain & Gavin did (2) solo albums afterwards, all being hard to find but the budget to do it well wasn't there. This is a classic good time pop album that deserved better. I agree with the previous reviewer. Where is "Down To Earth"? 4 1/2 stars.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Memory building music 4 Jun 2005
By Jeffrey T. McCalib - Published on Amazon.com

The Sutherland Brothers' last album, and they just kept getting better and better. Their long time lead guitarist, Tim Renwick, is replaced by some fine LA session men including some wicked lead work by Rick Vito. It's filled with catchy pop and rock songs and as a bonus three songs from Down To Earth are included. Another fine album with no filler. Hope this doesn't mean Down To Earth is not planned for CD release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meet Merle Haggard 10 Jan 2013
By Gordon A. FitzGerald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
A quick review- I love all SB releases, easily one of the best of the not-too-well known 70's groups. This one has beautiful songs and singing- Sunbird, When the Night Comes Down, On the Rocks, One More Night with You, Easy Come, Easy Go, First Love. I was surprised to find that Merle Haggard covered "Easy Come, Easy Go" (on Bear Family set The Troubadour); sounds great. The Everly Brothers covered their "Arms of Mary" (from Reach for the Sky). The SB's are (were) "real"; genuine and heartfelt music that moves the soul, with clear vocal harmonies and sparkling guitars. I wish more people knew about them. I hope some music company re-issues all their music in a quality package; it would gladden the world (well, the few who know these guys). "The Pie", from their first release, is one of the most beautiful songs I know.
