Book Description

1 April 1990
Trudi Chase is an apparently ordinary woman in her thirties. She visited a psychiatrist because she felt "unreal" and suffered from odd memory lapses. He discovered that she is inhabited by over ninety spirits, some aware of each other, some not. This book forms part of her attempt to come to terms with her separate selves and to reconcile them to each other. Her problems are apparently rooted in horrific childhood sexual abuse. Until she learns whether or not she killed the man who abused her, her therapy must continue. Her "troops" provide the narrative, when one voice tires, another takes over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Amazing 21 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is one of the most amazing books that I have ever read and would recommend it to everyone, I leant it to one of my friends and she felt the same as I do. Although I was slightly worried at first that I would be confused by the number of personalities this book was written in a way that lead to a complete understanding into their formation. Although a tough read with all that happened in her early years, it is a brilliantly heart rendering insight, which is all the more poignant if experienced at any degree first hand. A book that I think is well worth a place in anyones bookcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very emotional! 15 Aug 1999

Well written. Probably an eye opener for people who do not know about or accept some of the worst types of child abuse and what it can do. Trudi (& troops) must be complimented not only for telling her (their) story but for the honest and yet tactful way it was told. I would recomend reading this book AND having a friend to discuss it with! Thank you Trudi and Troops

4.0 out of 5 stars A very hard book to read. 20 Nov 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the very, very sad story of a little girl's life on a farm, with her step father who is a very cruel man, and her mother who is not much better, it tell's the story (quite graphically) of the sexual, mental and physical abuse this girl went through from when she was little more than a baby, it's not a "nice" book to read, but in fairness I don't think "nice" is the word meant for this book, it's very hard to read at times and had me in tears thinking what this child went through with no-one to help her. I read the book a week ago and I still get a lump in my throat when I think of her life with the people who were supposed to protect her.

This incredibly moving book brings tears to my eyes and
rage into my heart every time I read it. Not for the faint-
hearted, this is a journey through the therapy and discovery
of "Truddi Chase's" past.

At the age of two, Truddi Chase's original psyche "died" as
the result of a brutal, incestuous incident. The abuse
continued for years. As the abuse continued, the Troops
grew, and took shape, each one only marginally aware, if at
all, of the others. The incredible internal dialogue which
ensues and the rage which cannot and will not be denied
remind me on every page that this is more than an
autobiography; it's a catharsis.

After flailing about in a sea of self-destruction, dissociation and broken promises, I finally understand why. 'When Rabbit Howls' is a magnificent account of the most nerve-racking condition in the world, and the most ingenious - multiple personality. For the woman known as Truddi Chase to survive the horrific abuse of her childhood, and for her to have given us this account, is nothing short of a blessing from God. We understood every word of this book and will cherish it forever. We finally feel as though we belong in the world. The Troops have transformed our lives with their compassion, friendship, understanding and resourcefulness. We HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who has endured abuse at the hands of those with greater power - for whatever reason. After reading this book, you will understand that "multiple personality" is not a disorder - it is the best we can do!

When I read this book, I felt myself crying for this child. The horror that she must have gone through day-by-day was just amazing. I have nothing but respect for Truddi Chase. She is a survivor. I was very intrugied by how many personalities she carried, and how she survived daily life going from one to the other. I just thought that the book was very real, extremely painful to read, but very fascinating all at once.

My mother gave me this book to read when it first was published in 1987 when I was 11 years old. It was incredibly hard for me to fathom, but I read it time and time again because I could feel the intensity of the story beyond the words I could not yet comprehend. Now at 22 years old, I have read this book at least 10+ times...and now that I understand it it never fails to make me angry.
This woman suffered more hell than anyone in this lifetime ever should have to...except for perhaps the man that created that hell. As a survivor...(though not to nearly her degree), I could not help but feel murderous rage towards this hellspawn of a man that created her worlds with his wicked hands. It's a graphic story, not forthe faint hearted or the weak spirited...it will put you in perspective in all ways, from the naivete of the child to the awful mature memories ...you will see it through her eyes; you will be there with her as she relives it.
I thank my mother for giving me this book to read; it was of more help than a thousand therapy sessions. It's a harrowing, shattered, painful story of triumph over what seems to be insurmountable odds; this woman has been an idol of mine for years, her and the Troops, and one day it would be a great pleasure to make her aquaintance just to smile at her and say, "You won."

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent 30 Oct 1997

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I found the case of Trudi Chase to be one of the most paniful, yet interesting cases of MP that ever came to be known. Her generation of "the troops" was something that many of us feel all the time, only amplified millions of over. Not for the faint of heart though, it's very intense
