Book Description

28 Aug 2013
Informed by John Fiske's extensive experience as a dealer in English oak furniture, 'When Oak Was New' provides an in-depth guided tour of familiar and lesser-known forms for both the novice and experienced collector. 'When Oak Was New' invites readers to look at antique furniture in a new way. In telling the story of English furniture from 1530 to 1700, Fiske blends witty accounts of daily life in Tudor and Stuart England with extensive photographs and close descriptions of the furniture that made those lifestyles convenient and comfortable. He shows that we cannot fully understand the furniture that we know as antique without understanding how its owners used it when it was new, and how a piece of furniture, in turn, captures its historical moment. Over 750 photographs vividly illustrate the boundless creativity of countless anonymous joiners and carvers whose work was central to the development of modern life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Book, Shoddy Presentation 4 Mar 2014
By Fergus
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Packed with great anecdotes and facts, the author's honest enthusiasm makes for a really enjoyable read, but the physical presentation of the book is pretty shoddy. Crude line drawings, cheap paper, and dreadful black and white photographs that belong in a tabloid newspaper.

Very informative reading, with he why's and wherefore;s of how furniture evolved within its social time line. Would take issue with some of authors so called facts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 25 Mar 2014
By Bruce W. Burnham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
John Fiske is a long-standing authority on early English and American country furniture, and one of the few who writes enthusiastically about his extraordinary knowledge. The book is crammed with insights and little-known details on the subject.
