I for one am very pleased they don't.
Written from the diaries and memories of the young, adventurous British women who travelled to Russia to work as governesses for aristocratic families, this book is a hidden gem.It tells not just of the young ladies and their charges, but of Russian life pre and post revolutions.
Fascinating, thrilling and poignant I had difficulty putting it down and it left me wanting to know more about these brave young women, many of whom were with their familes during the revolutions and civil war. In fact, several were instrumental in helping their employers to escape.More than one remained in Russia with
" their families ",long after the revolution, when food was scarce and bullets were literally flying around.Refusing to leave as long as they were needed, they kept their cool and a stiff upper lip while all around them a country descended into chaos.
In Russia,a Governess was considered part of the family and was treated as such.
There were no lonely hours spent in a cold attic room for these young women, they were included in trips to the theatre, invited to balls and parties. As such we are able to see at first hand what life was like for Russian aristocracy before 1917.
Harvey Pitcher has done a tremendous amount of research here, including interviews with the elderly but " bright eyed " survivors. It's a book I shall enjoy reading again.

Fascinating collection of stories about a little known group of courageous women. I read it on first publication many years ago and was delighted to find it now available on kindle. I enjoyed it every bit as much on this re-reading. If you are interested in life in czarist, revolutionary and immediately post revolutionary Russia, I recommend this book.
