Deep, Deep Soul 12 July 2005
By Glenn Nippert - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album features great but obscure R&B artists from the late sixties and early seventies mostly culled from the Scepter, Wand and Dynamo labels. Excellent vocal groups like The Masqueraders(the five cats in the cover photo), who have two great cuts on here,"Let's Face Facts" and "Sweet Lovin' Woman". Charlie Whitehead, who was a talented singer and protege of Jerry "Swamp

Dogg" Williams is also spotlighted twice with the super catchy "How Can I Forget" and "The Story of Mr. Pitiful", which is a sequel song of sorts to Otis Redding's classic and features some of the original's melody and lyrics as well and was produced by Swamp Dogg with Gary U.S Bonds. R&B veteran Lloyd Price has a great version of the country soul tune "Mr. and Mrs. Untrue", with a big, dramatic horn section. Sam Cooke's little known brother LC Cooke is here with a very strong "Let's Do It Over". " It Hurt's So Good", later a big hit for Millie Jackson is done here by Katie Love and The Four Shades Of Black in an earlier, equally good version. If you like Deep Soul style music, this album needs to be in your CD collection.

Essential compilation 30 Mar 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
One of the best compilations to come out in the last few years. track number 25 "falling in love again" by Johnny Moore ended up being played over and over again on my stereo. Great duet singing hauntingly beautiful in the same way as listening to the Everly Brothers harmonize. It's great to have alot of these hard (or even impossible) to find singles on CD. Many of these tracks are not overly reliant on hooks, so they definitely need continued listening to realize just how incredible most of these songs are. But well worth the effort.

"I'm Wondering" what became of Winfield Parker 2 April 2006
By mackjay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This compilation is essential to aficionados of Soul from the 60s and early 70s: a period ignored or forgotten by many. Almost every track is top-notch in some way or another, and an appreciative listener will be grateful to the producers for digging them up and including them here. The sound is excellent on every track and the disc has a generous 27 songs. Benny Gordon's "Crying Man" and the odd but effective "Falling in Love Again" by Johnny Moore are just a couple of standouts among so many. A rare track by the magnificent Tommy Hunt, "The Complete Man" could make the disc essential to any collector. Everyone will have a favorite, but it would be hard to top "I'm Wondering" by Winfield Parker. This virtually unknown singer has a class-A voice and sings with such intensity that it's almost unbearable. The song has a generic lyric, but the haunting tune and Parker's delivery make it all seem too real, and it may stick your mind's ear for long afterward. Soul collectors: do not overlook this one.
