Product Description

Some men are not for marrying. They have no interest in being dutiful, respectable husbands. What they offer is a sensual paradise to any woman who dares take it. And Julius D' Abernon, Marquis of Darley, is the master of the game. Julius's scandalous exploits have inflamed the pages of "The Tatler" for years. It is said he can seduce any woman with one of his smiles. Julius can have any woman he wants, but bedding Lady Grafton? That would be a challenge indeed. The very reputable Elspeth, Lady Grafton, is as refreshingly candid and quick-witted as she is beautiful and vibrant. Pity that she is the virtual prisoner of her tyrannical, aged husband, a man who cannot gratify his wife in any way. Such a woman should, nay, needs to experience the joys of passion that Julius is ever so qualified to administer-selflessly, of course. One kiss will get her into his chambers. But one kiss turns out to be more than he bargained for and yet not nearly enough.

I loved this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the characters. I found I really cared what happened to them.
The plot was well thought out and the lovemaking was, well--lovely!
Setting and atmosphere was extremely good.
I learned things about the Regency period I didn't know which only added to my enjoyment.
A delightful book from a great author.

Not quite a 5 star but still a solid read. 16 Nov 2006
By J. Brennan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
There are some Susan Johnson books that I found absolutely amazing for their sexuality and intense plot. This one was neither of those. Julias was a bit too aloof for me. I do not mind dark mysterious men that are rakes and seem to have plenty of reasons for their troubled ways. Julius seemed to have a wonderful family and a perfect life so he just came off a bit spoiled to me. There is no question that Elspith is ripe for a man like this, who wouldn't be after marrying such a horrible older man as Lord Grafton. He just gave me chills. For Elspith to find some emotional solace with Julius was wonderful and truly captured my heart. She seemed like a woman that deserved happiness and finally Julius came up to snuff for her. But for me there was just a tiny bit missing from his side and if I was a betting person I would say they would not be totally happily ever after.

terrific erotic Regency romance 7 Jan 2006
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In 1788, as a vicar's daughter, Elspeth understands the sanctity of her wedding vows though she detests her marriage to elderly cold-hearted Lord Grafton who had two previous wives. Gossip amidst the Ton insists she is still a virgin six months after they exchanged I Do's as she allegedly sent him into a fit of apoplexy that has left him confined to a Bath chair. She wonders if she did the right thing when she agreed to marry lecherous "Old Hellfire", but did so with her parents dead so that her brother could gain a military commission. While she suffers with Grafton as a watchdog companion, her sibling serves in India.

Marquis Julius D'Abernon hears the rumors of Elspeth's virginity that between her and her husband they guard as precious cargo. He decides that she is just the challenge he needs to get over his current boredom that has even the Tatler wondering what happened to their top juicy scandal maker. Julius begins his seduction campaign one kiss at a time. However, as he opens her senses to the sensations of lovemaking, he finds he is seduced by the virgin but he only obtains temporary respites from his needs for her. He becomes bolder and she increasingly brazen because it is strange what love can make people do.

This is a terrific erotic Regency romance starring a likable heroine who turns from being depressed to euphoric due to the antics of hedonist turned adoring lover Julius. Old Hellfire lives up to his name so few will be upset when the lead couple cuckolds him (mindful of one of the Canterbury Tales). Fans will appreciate this fine historical romance and root for the lead pair to come together permanently.

Definitely NOT her best! DO NOT waste your $ 21 Dec 2005

I've read all of Susan's novels and like most of them and love some. But this one, I hate. I felt like she just wrote it because she had to. The characters aren't interesting at all! They've no depth. The sex scenes are dull and are very scarce. The main characters have no passion or chemistry. Basically this is what happens: A blonde 25 year-old whose married to an old controlling geezer, meets a handsome rake at a horse race. They secretly meet over the week they are at the race. They are aided by his recent paramour (whom he sleeps with and goes straight to the heroines bed w/out a bath or anything!). His paramour initially demands her payment in the currency of sex, for distracting the heroine's husband while the hero secretly meets with the heroine. Then, 2/3 of the way through the book, the heroine gets a letter saying her brother, who is a soldier, is wounded. She then leaves for the continent to rescue him and at the last minute the hero decides to accompany her. They rescue him. The old geezer dies, and "they lived happily ever after",
