Book Description

6 Oct 2011 When I Were
When I Were A Meerkat is an extension of the 100,000 selling Portico title When I Were A Lad. Already it has generated spin-offs: When I Were A School Lad and When I Were A Nipper. In 'Meerkat', instead of raggedtrousered children scrabbling around the streets, getting put in perilous positions - the stock in trade of the previous books - the north of England is populated with a small number of meerkats. They do their best to escape the grinding poverty and poor schooling to make a better life for themselves. Meerkats get put to work down the mines, go to Blackpool for their holidays and mess about on trams. The meerkat world and the human world easily intermingle in a reworking of many of the photos first used in When I Were A Lad.

5.0 out of 5 stars When I were Needing a Laugh..... 8 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover
I did not want this book to end! But like a brilliant first date or a fine sticky toffee pudding, it ends too quickly, but brings a smile to your face went brought to mind. Unlike a sticky toffee pudding, it won't become a permanent amendment to your hips! Alas, just like that brilliant first date, you live in fear, doubt and despair there will never be another quite like it. So, if the author, Andrew Davies, is out there and reading this missive, please: a.) get cracking on a sequel... a l-o-n-g-e-r sequel, b.) learn to bake sticky toffee pudding, c.) contact me for a brilliant first date, or d.) come around mine, I'll bake the sticky toffee while you write!!!

I bought this book as a Christmas gift but cannot think of parting with it now. After sharing my copy with children at church and the after school club, they all wanted their pictures taken with meerkats, photography by pandas! Well, except for Alan Erghott who only wanted to know where he could find six slugs stuck to the bottom of a barrel! Then I shared the book with the "former-children" at the Thursday Afternoon Club. Poor Edith laughed so hard at the massed accordions of St. Cuthbert's sinfonia that her top dentures fell out and landed right in Mr. Crenshaw's lap. At 92 years old, don't you know that gave him the biggest thrill since Mrs. Eddlestone's garter snapped when she hit that high C in church choir! To this day, the bishop never has come back!!

Everyone who saw this book, ages from 3 to 94, loved this book and wanted it for their own. (My stun gun has never had so much action!) Even my granddad, a more sorrowful soul you'll never meet, could not keep his lips from quivering in a guffaw when he saw the lads from the collieries.

I loved this book and bought 2 more for my neices, we all laughed so much
it is very cleverly put together and the text is funny no matter what the picture,
but seeing the meerkats in old garb made it hilarious.

My wife was actually given a copy for Christmas so I bought one for her brother. I was a child of the 50's and practically every picture is a fond memory of my childhood. This book is full of fun!
