Review

Peter is an old friend of mine from Liverpool. While I found my way into a notorious music group, he went on to university and greater things ! It was not long before he had a very successful career in television and though both of us have led fairly hectic lives, we still keep in touch. His memoirs are a must-read. --Sir Paul McCartney

An ever-revealing, funny and trenchant book from one of the finest TV journalists of his generation --Andrew Neil

Product Description

After a 45-year career spanning the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, Peter Sissons is more qualified to comment than most on the state of British media, current affairs and the world at large. Whe One Door Closes is a hugely entertaining account of the distinguished and popular career of one of television s best-known anchors. Funny, hard hitting, and savage where his feelings are strongest, Sissons has seen both the BBC and commercial television at their best and their worst, and has original and highly readable views on what he has encountered.

Fascinating Insight 21 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover
A fascinating insight in to the back-biting and bitchy BBC, showing how (mostly) it is run by an 'elite hierarchy' unwilling to change with the times or welcome fresh ideas for fear of their position on the greasy pole. I should think Mr Sissons still regrets his move from Channel 4. Not the best book I have ever read but still worth reading as it makes you realise how management top-heavy the BBC is.

If you like politics and current affairs then this book has to be essential reading. The memoirs of Peter Sissons provide a unique incite into broadcast news and current affairs. He has left no stone unturned in his forensic account of life as a journalist at ITN and the BBC and there's no going back to the BBC after this book - I would say all bridges have been well and truly burned.

Left wingers should be overjoyed to hear what an influential ally they have in the BBC but I suspect most will cringing at been rumbled by the woeful tales of bias, political spin, eco-zealotry, anti-human, anti-Jewish, pro-big government/big tax/big legislation, anti-freedom propaganda been spewed forth from the BBC. It's worth noting that the traits Sissons refers to of the BBC in this book, go against the BBC's remit as the licence fee funded state broadcaster and is sure to send sock-waves throughout the organisation.

The humour in the book comes from the stories and situations as they unfolded rather than the author literary style and I have to say I was howling with laughter and disbelief throughout. I am very grateful to Peter Sissons for his brave account of life on the front line of news. Excellent read.

Fascinating 18 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I recently saw Peter Sissons giving a talk about this book. He is an honest and unbiased man. He says what he thinks. In answer to the other reviewer: Peter went on to explain, in the talk, that he is a friend of the BBC; however, sometimes it needs a friend to tell you where you are going wrong. We all love the BBC, but it is right for it to be criticised: otherwise it would be unaccountable to anyone.

An excellent and insightful book from an interesting and intelligent man; I thoroughly recommend it.
