Book Description

A lively social and political history of Glasgow through the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, the Hungry Thirties and the Clydebank Blitz

Product Description

When the Clyde Ran Red paints a vivid picture of the heady days when revolution was in the air on Clydeside. Through the bitter strike at the Singer sewing machine plant in Clydebank in 1911, Bloody Friday in George Square in 1919, the General Strike of 1926 and on to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, the men and women of Glasgow, Clydebank and beyond fought for the right to work, the dignity of labour and a fairer society for everyone.

They did so in a Glasgow where overcrowded tenements stood no distance from elegant tearooms, art galleries and glittering picture palaces. Red Clydeside was also home to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow Style and magnificent exhibitions showcasing the wonders of the age. Political idealism and artistic creativity were matched by industrial endeavour. The Clyde built many of the greatest ships that ever sailed the seas, as locomotives from Glasgow pulled trains on every continent on earth.

When the Clyde Ran Red celebrates the determination, achievements and sheer lust for life of the people of Glasgow, Clydebank and Clydeside.

This is an excellent book, well researched and very informative. It covers the period from the 1890s up to the 1940s, telling the history of Red Clydeside - people like James Maxton and the Singer factory workers. It will also appeal to Scots nationalists too and anyone interested in the history of the shipyards.

Why not five stars? The chapter on the dance halls and schools of Glasgow seemed a little out of place. But overall, it tells a moving story of ordinary people in difficult times.

Living History! 8 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
Maggie Craig's first six novels were set in Glasgow & Clydebank during the first half of the 20th century and inspired by the author's own family background.

Wearing her esteemed historian's hat she returns to those familiar haunts and times for this fascinating social and political history of Glasgow through the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, the Hungry Thirties and the Clydebank Blitz.

You would expect a historian of Craig's renowned to have all the glittering facts in place and indeed every page holds a freshly mined gem. The research and attention to interesting detail are equally impressive but readers will be swept along into this compelling narrative by Craig's buoyant and lively style.

Craig writes punchy sentences that build to create a cracking pace. She also has the novelist's ability to bring characters to vivid life no matter how briefly their flame burns.

Through the bitter strike at the Singer sewing machine plant in Clydebank in 1911, Bloody Friday in George Square in 1919, the General Strike of 1926 and on to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s this story never fails to grip.

As a record of social change this book is invaluable. Hopefully a copy has found its way to the Scottish Parliament where it should be compulsory reading.

"When The Clyde Ran Red faithfully documents these tumultuous events which took place in what must have been life-enhancing times, but Maggie Craig achieves much more than re-documenting tales and phenomena well-known to historians and socialists..." - full review here:
