Don't judge a CD by its cover. I had expected this to be a b-list of extras that didn't make Jackie's next full CD in his own name, for which we have to wait until September 2008 (his label boss has sadly restricted titles in his own name to 1 every 18 months). Add to that an album title which I wasn't sure of, and more seeming 'tribute' songs (which have previously varied in quality), I wasn't expecting Jackie's best.
How marvellous it is to have your expectations trumped! This is a fine CD - musically I think it is actually one of Jackie's best. The musical pallete has broadened, and the CD includes 3 exquisite cover versions - Donovan's Ballad of Geraldine, Judee Sill's When The Bridegroom Comes, which captures her cadences perfectly, and a beautifully executed Blues Run the Game, reminding us why every 60s folkie covered this gorgeous song. There are just 4 new Leven originals, each of which spreads its branches beyond narrow themes, so songs touching on Kevin Coyne and Johnny Dowd meditate on other scenes too. With an extended live version of Little Voice in Space, it adds up to a lovely CD. As with the last CD, he generously lets another artist have a guest song, Dan Britton's Leonard (which I guess is about the wrongly convicted Native American Leonard Peltier). It all adds up to a great CD ranking with the best Jackie has made, and will easily win a place close to your heart.
