I've read several of Sarah Webb's books before, so when I saw this one I picked it up instantly. And from the very first page I thought it was hilarious. Full of manic things that happen in any family; but lots of unusual things thrown in too like the life of a woman with a professional sailor as a partner which is a bit different.
It's basically about a woman called Meg whose partner is a sailor and is always flying around the world to sail and is never home. She makes friends with Tina who lives next door who has her own man problems. And then there's Hattie, Meg's mad sister who falls for a guy called Ryan. Then Simon comes back to live with Meg and she finds this even more difficult than him being away. Oh and Simon's parents are awful and Meg can't stand her mother in law who is pretty horrible.
I could really relate to Meg's life as my husband works away a lot too. I think a lot of women will identify with Meg's life in fact - a mixture of highs and lows with some frantic times when things go wrong and some fun times when you finally get to spend some time together.
I thought the children - Lily and Dan were very well described - nice, normal and funny children. No angels either! And I loved the bad boy, Sid, Meg's ex and the dad of her first child. And Hattie who is so funny she had me crying with laughter at one stage.
There's a great twist towards the end I wasn't expecting at all too. All in all it's a lovely book, funny, sweet and a bit sad. But with a happy ending of course. I'd highly recommend it if you like writers like Sinead Moriarty, Clare Dowling or Martina Reilly.
