5.0 out of 5 stars So good I bought it twice... 23 Feb 2011

...once for a new baby, once for a one-year old. Absolutely charming, and a fantastically beautiful book with simple, elegant and colourful illustrations that tell the tale of what it's like to be a new little person in the world. It would make a lovely gift for a christening or naming ceremony. This book made me wish I could draw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated book with poetic words 12 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have bought 2 copies of this book, one to read my son & one for a friend. Even though my son is too young to understand the words he likes looking at the colours and shapes of the illustrations and the words of the book make it a lovely bedtime story. The general gist of the book is that when we are born we don't know anything, only the darkness of our mothers tummy, yet as we grow we discover there is a whole world to explore full of wonder and excitement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for young babies 1 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I originally bought this book as I hoped it would be appropriate as a significant book to give to my son to celebrate his Naming Day. Upon reading the book I can see now that it is more appropriate of a child of a couple of years at least as it refers to back when the child was born he could do nothing but now he can do lots of things, whereas my son is still in the doing nothing stage so it doesn't match up. However, this is still a lovely book and the illustrations and colours are awesome. I also like the inspiration it leave you with on the last page, so I have decided to keep this book anyway and read it my son when he is older.

bought it as a Christening present. It's not suitable for a baby but I think she will appreciate reading it with her parents when she is older.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not that great 14 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover
The drawings are lovely and bright, but the pages are matt and the paper has that rough recycled feel. This book is definitely for older children, say 2-3 yrs+. The text does not rhyme and instead is a type of poem about things that the child discovers. An example of this is

"When I was born I had never seen anything. Only the darkness of my mother's tummy.
When I was born I had never seen the sun or a flower or a face. I didn't know anybody and nobody knew me.
When I was born I didn't know what the sea was. I didn't know that there were forests and a world with mountains and beaches "......

In all honesty, I love some of the drawings from an art perspective, but I don't find the text that exciting.
