‘A thriller which signposts its story line, but still wheels on a few surprises. Cruder than Lovesey Jnr’s two earlier tales, but keeping its confidence as it goes uproariously OTT’

Product Description

Psychological thriller from acclaimed new voice in British writing: ‘Chilling and deviously plotted’ – Val McDermid, The Times

Local police thought George Picket was little more than a serial complainer. But as Chairman of the Chelmsford Allotment Society, the summer’s run-in with a wayward group of youths had begun to reach ever more serious heights. Then one late October evening a single match lights a trail of suburban death and destruction, whose dreadful hidden consequences reach far beyond the innocent allotment plots.

Freelance reporter Jack Latimer takes up Picket’s case, completely unaware of the millennial nightmare the Chairman’s tale will unearth. A severed head, a badly bungled drugs deal, a dead hangman’s grandson and the menace of juvenile crime are just some of the elements Jack will encounter in reporting a story which threatens not only to destroy his career – but his very life too.

This is a gripping tale which starts out as a small scale vandalism incident and esculates into it's violent and graphic ending. I liked this book because the plot grips you from the start and draws out initial sympathy for George Picket, a pensioner bullied by teenagers and demons from his past and Jack Lamiter reporter/detective who gets more than a cheque for his story. I have not read other titles by Phil Lovesy but I have a full intention to. This book uses very good descriptive techniques and it contrubutes to the greatness of this book. If you are looking for a book with a thrilling plot, graphic descriptions but with a back bone of warmth and love this is the book for you.
