I only heard of Cable as i read Rod, from another great band Idlewild, liked them so i found this CD and bought it un-heard. What a shock i got when i took the record home and heard the opening power of "Souvenir" and it kept getting better with the catchy "Bluebirds Are Blue" and the uncontrollable bass anger of "Signature Tune". The album then chills out a bit in the middle with the hushed melody of "Freeze The Atlantic" and the Pavement in a blender sounding "Ultra Violet". Its after the pogoing madness of "I'm Always Right" and the distortion filled "The Colder Climate" that the albums two gems reveal themselves."Whisper Firing Line" is a quiet song which builds to a beautiful chorus. My personal favourite follows "God Gave Me Gravity" which starts with an acoustic sound before an adrenilin filled chorus. "From Here You Can See Yourself" is just plain manic and to close is the Sonic Youth-esque "Do The Tube" which manages to rhyme "risko" with "disco". The only bad thing about this album is the fact the band is split up so people like me will never see them live, but it just further emphasises the brilliance of this underated band. If you like bands like Sonic Youth, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Idlewild and Fugazi this album will not disappoint and even if this is just a random buy its worth it! On the back of the CD the tracks are noted in miles per hour. Nuff said.....

This was the first thing I bought by Cable, and thankfully I did, it introduced me to one of the best emo(?) bands ever. This first full length album sounds along the lines of Shellac and Fugazi, but with a more pop feel. The most famous song, which you've heard, but probably don't realise it, is 'Freeze The Atlantic', which was used on a Sprite comercial a few years back. This album is sheer class.

but these guys were great. another one of those underrated bands that never got the attention they deserved and split up in 1998 due to legal pressures.
this was their first full-length album, starting off in frenetic fashion with 'souvenir' and closing with 'do the tube' which also merits the mph comment from another reviewer (certainly beats bpm). it's not all frantic throughout as cable display their dexterity and lyrical muscle with tracks like 'god gave me gravity' and 'the colder climate'.
recommend that you check out the 'freeze the atlantic' single for extra tracks 'sprite ad blues' ("you don't know where it's been") and 'ring of fire', which manages the awesome feat of making johnny cash listenable.
