Product Description

Synopsis

The experience of moving abroad differs between adults and children. For the first time, here is a book that is aimed at children (especially those between the ages of 8 and 12) of expatriate families, to help them to overcome the difficulties and strains of living in a foreign country. The book contains activities and assignments to build the confidence of expatriate children and encourage them to take initiatives in exploring their new environment. Through the character of Ori, the migrating bird, this book empathises with children during the different phases of the transition. Parents can read and participate in the activities along with their children, in order to help their children master and enjoy life abroad. (UK RIGHTS ONLY).

4.0 out of 5 stars Book Review - When Abroad do as the Local Children do, 21 Oct 2002
This review is from: When Abroad, Do as the Local Children Do: Ori's Guide for Young Expats (Paperback)
The authors of this book, Hilly van Swol-Ulbrich and Bettina Kaltenhauser have created and designed a unique guide for young expats moving to any part of the world. The generic approach of this book allows the authors to focus on the entire process of the international assignment cycle including repatriation.

Ori and Ricki, the central characters of the book, guide the children through a variety of different activities, adventures, and recommendations related to moving overseas. The book clearly aims at actively involving the children and preparing them for the move ahead, addresses the sensitive topic of saying good-bye to old friends and hello to new ones, provides a safe forum for discussing feeling and emotions, and offers tools to enable children to handle the waves of culture shock. A final section for parents and instructors presents advice and recommendations to ease the move and transition period along with a further list of resources.

This child friendly accessible approach supports the use of the book as a stand-alone tool for any family moving overseas. The extensive training background of the authors is clearly demonstrated throughout the book, as it offers intercultural trainers, new to working with expatriate children, a well balanced program addressing all aspects of the move from a child's perspective. The book is also accompanied by a website filled with creative resources which offers an interactive approach to continue the learning.

You will learn by looking on the site that Ori is also a soft toy animal. At present, several Ori's are on a trip around the world visiting as many international schools within a set time-frame!

This unique collection of tools ~ the book, website, and actual stuffed animals ~ are all ideally suited to assist and guide children with the challenging maze of moving overseas. You will see for yourself that this book is definitely worth having before your next international move.
