Good, almost perfect 23 Jun 2009

Our first real prepainted Reliant model is here!

As you may have read in other reviews, this is NOT an all-die cast product. The top and sides of the saucer section is die cast, the nacelles and "rollbar" are plastic.

The entire toy is durable, there are NO mold problems that are apparent with the Playmates, Furuta/F-Toys or Galoob versions. Meaning the nacelles are straight and parallel. The only quirk is that the rear of the nacelles seems to be a seperate piece that was glued to them, so the nacelle exterior is not a solid mold, it seems they did this so they could install the blue warp coil.

The paint job is good, but not great. The paint on the metal parts is somewhat glossy, which contrasts the plastic parts that are flat. The two parallel rectangular sections on the top of the saucer are white, the same white as the rest of the saucer. The only glaring paint error, is that the starboard nacelle pylon has the starfleet insignia/red stripes/text reversed. It seems that it is a flipped reuse of the port side marking. The print is so tiny, it is virtually impossible to notice with the naked eye.

The biggest error is the display stand. As the model is mostly metal on the top/front, the model falls forward. There is no way around this, aside from gluing the stand to the model. Huge oversight on the part of Mattel. My guess is that the whole model was supposed to be metal when the stand was designed, the weight would have been distributed evenly then. The good news is, that it sits up fine on the nacelles, no tipping at all.

Great model though, definately worth the money. Buy this before it's discontinued and your only option is eBay.

Toy is EIGHTEEN FEET LONG ! ! 21 Jun 2013

No, this toy is NOT eighteen feet long, but it would have to be 18' long in order for it to be an actual 50:1 scale model of a 277.75 meter-long vessel as claimed. Scale is actually 1366:1.

BTW, an eight inch long 50:1 scale model implies that the USS Reliant is smaller than a bus. (No wonder why Khan was so grouchy.)
