Few guide books on choir training present the information and the essential tools in such a concise, engaging, and practical manner as the "Five Wheels..." John Bertalot communicates techniques and methods in vivid, unforgettable terms. The book describes the learning experience of an aspiring choral director, his encounters with a master teacher, and the list of dos and don'ts that his teacher imparts to him not only by precept but by practical example as well. Bertalot's fresh, caring, and passionate approach coupled with flashes of humor result in an easily readable and accessible handbook for choir directors. Its main focus is on cultivating sight-singing skills, but the methods and approaches contained in this 128-page paperback could be adapted and applied to any field of learning and instruction. Bertalot outlines five wheels: passion, small group instruction, one step at a time, theory and practice in tandem, and the steering wheel in the hands of the driver (i.e. choir under the control of the director) rather than the driver at the mercy of the steering wheel (or the conductor manipulated by the choir). I would recommend this book to all choir directors, especially directors of children's choirs. I am a director of children's and youth choirs, and I have found this material motivating, inspiring, and encouraging.
