Product Description

Product Description
Sven Hassel rejoins his comrades in the 27th penal battalion - now equipped with armoured vehicles - for the next battles on the Russian Front. Caught between the insane orders of the Nazi high command and the overwhelming numbers of Russian soldiers, Sven and his mates fight on regardless. They hate Hitler and Stalin in equal measure and will do anything to survive the inferno. Described as 'a novel of atrocity' when first published in English, WHEELS OF TERROR is a remorseless ride through a man-made Hell.

About the Author
Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout World War II on all fronts except North Africa. Wounded eight times, he ended the war in a Russian prison camp. He wrote LEGION OF THE DAMNED while being transferred between American, British and Danish prisons before making a new life for himself in Spain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, violent and thoroughly readable, 30 Jul 2003
By P. N. Hussey "pnh77" (Haywards Heath, England) - See all my reviews

This book is an episodic semi-autobiographical journey through a part of the Second World War told through the eyes of the 'hero', Sven Hassel, a member of a penal regiment fighting the Russians. The book contains a lot of deeply unpleasant and brutally violent scenes that ring horrifically true. This isn't a rose tinted version of war we see in Hollywood movies but a grim, harsh and horrible reality. Despite it's unpleasantness this is hugely readable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly his best, 14 Oct 2008
By H. T. Davies - See all my reviews

Once again first read this at school 30 years ago and still have my old dog-eared copy - which does not have the "panzerporn" cover with the SS logo but rather a more sobering photo of a dead tanker lying next to his burnt out Tiger I and the tagline - "the book no German publisher dared print."

Roughly divides into two parts, starting with Allied bombing of Hamburg and life in the barracks before returning to the Eastern Front. I don't agree with the reviewer who says that the translation is bad and the chapters unconnected. To me the style is a little like Hemingway and thus disjointed in the same way and conveys the action and emotion realistically. The chapter 'Refugees' is particularly poignant. The translation is much better than, for example, in Comrades of War where the translator simply invents words when he doesn't what they are in English.

Altogether a sobering read, showing the brutal face of war and the war machine (State Execution and the scene with Heide and the child). Not at all the "panzerpron' adventure portrayed in the art work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wheels of Terror!, 16 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Previously banned in Germany this story of war atrocity is everything but controversial. The main character Porta is a lanky loud mouth with hardly any teeth and a top hat who carries a kitten in his gasmask carry case and yet despite this rather strange Obertafuhuer, he is a merciless killing maschine and convicted rapist.
And he's just one of the many colourful characters that our first person accounts from Sven Hassel acknowledges. We have an amazing novel that depicts war in all it's horrid and gruesome non-glory. The beggining is nothing but disturbing and sets a tone for the rest of the book yet even with the charred children and dying women there are the odd bits of black humour.
One of my favourite books ever, live on war pulp fiction.

Some of Solzhenitzyn's obituarists said he was a witness rather than a talented author. That's certainly true of Sven Hassel. Read more
