5.0 out of 5 stars a real gem 20 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is great that this wonderful album has been reissued. Recorded live in 1993 this is a terrific showcase of the talents of these two master musicians. Robin Williamson, 20th/21st Century bard, playing largely the Celtic harp is at the peak of his story telling powers with 'Finn and The Old Man's House' and at his songwriting best with the absolutely beautiful 'Lights of Sweet St Anne's'. John Renbourn, brilliant guitarist, excels on a number of instrumental tracks here as well as offering two superb versions of traditional songs in 'The Snows' and 'Matt Highland'. If you saw these two together on their 2006 tour you will want to get this album. If you didn't see them get it anyway because this is real music, beautifully played with fantastic spirit and life. A really life enhancing record.

4.0 out of 5 stars Experience and mastery on "Wheel of Fortune" 15 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
When two such experienced and masterful men team up, everybody should pay attention, and this cd rewards that attention to a large extent. It is not presenting anything new or daring, but it does evoke the concert experience that make all concerts of our rock & folk heroes great.

Williamson dominates the stage, and Renbourn seems quite content with that. Give the man a guitar and he produces the finest guitar work you could wish for. His singing will not stir any audience, but we knew that, didn't we ?

Obviously, the central piece is "Finn & the old man's house" in which Williamson shows what a good storyteller can do to amuse and to instruct his audience.

In all, this is a satisfying piece of work with some outstanding performances - but it lacks the orginality, spirit and freshness to be called great. For fans only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic 15 May 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you liked Pentangle or loved the Incredible String Band, this CD is for you. Two master musicians, one a gentleman visionary and the other a visionary gentleman. The Lights of Sweet St Anne's taps into something fundamental. John Renbourne's guitar work is masterful; Robin Williamson's harp is mesmerising and virtuosic, especially when he accompanies himself telling the story of Finn and the Old Man's House; and it's all live. Renbourne likes to refer to the duo as The Impenetrable String Tangle - very droll.
