Amazon.co.uk Review

Ever since Weezer hit the big time with their geeky take on power pop, the American rock scene has always reserved a special place for whiny guys with guitars. Unfortunately, and as is often the way with such things, the quality of proper songwriting practised by the likes of Weezer got diluted by the onslaught of the Blink 182s of the world. Fortunately--and finally--Wheatus are on the case. Sure, they're playing adolescent brat-pop. But they do it so well. The songs are quick of tempo and short of length (the entire album clocks in at just under 35 minutes), and--most importantly--they're great. Hit single "Teenage Dirtbag" is a perfect example of what first made this scene so much fun: it's a catchy tune with witty lyrics, the music itself is clever (it starts with scratching and has some organ scattered about) and it sounds best loud. In fact, the same thing could be said of the majority of Wheatus, especially songs like "Sunshine" (yep, that's a banjo heard near the end) and the ska-influenced bounce of "Truffles". The only time Wheatus really stumble (apart from when they chose their name) is on the uninspired cover of Erasure's "Little Respect". Had they stuck solely with their own songs, this could have been as near perfect an album as any geek-rockers have produced. --Robert Burrow

Ever since Teenage Dirtbag exploded onto the scene of 2001, there has been a lot of expectation leading up to their debut album. There was an understandable amount of pressure on the band to come up with an explosive debut, after Teenage Dirtbag became one of the biggest sellers of 2001. Thankfully, this is not as bad an effort as it may seem.
Every song is tolerable, which is always a good sign for a semi serious rock band, and they are also rather good. And when played over and over, it is sensational. Truffles, for instance, the first track, is a funny (if the lyrics are listened to correctly), rocking and quite good song. Leroy is the next non hit outstanding song, with odd, but quite warm lyrics that catches you up in an frenzy of guitars. There are a couple more great songs, but they are all over shadowed by Punk A** B*tch, a magneficent rock out of a song, with bellowing lyrics and contrast between verses. After that, you would expect something pretty brilliant to top it, but instead you are given the slow and emotional "Wannabe Gangster', as a last track (those of you who saw the Wannabe Gangster video are probably confused at this point. The song released "Wannabe Gangster" was a remade version of the song on the album.). Instead of rocking us out at the end, we are instead greeted by the soft voices and slow guitars. It's amazing, mind. To typify the whole mood, the song fades away with cruel laughing children, saying lyrics from the song mockingly, and with the little abused boy crying...

Overall, a resounding effort, and the fact that they have gone for a while is honestly starting to scare me. Come back Wheatus! Come back!

This album is brilliant and you should get it right now. Brendon Brown is a great singer and there is a different song for everyone. If you want mellow then check out Wannabe Gangster but if you want bass check out Hey, Mr Brown. There is not one bad song on this album and the extra video is cool to. Can't wait till there next album is out and go and see them live in concert. Wheatus are amazing!

Teenage Dirtbag Baby! 15 Jan 2002
Format:Audio CD
Exploding onto the scene with the very popular and successful single Teenage Dirtbag, the song propelled Wheatus into rock's elite, even if they have endured some harsh critisism.Whilst bands like Sum 41 and Blink 182 have found success with similar sounding songs,Wheatus bring a fresh approach to the rock scene and whilst not being everyone's cup of tea, they prove on this album they can write good songs.
As a whole the album is very solid. The singles Teenage Dirtbag,A Little Respect and Leory/Wannabe Ganster are very good,as too are the accompaning tracks like Hump 'Em and Dump 'Em and Truffles.
It cannot be denied that this is a very good album and when Wheatus release their new album later this year,I'm sure they will enjoy the same amount of success as they did in 2001.
