This is a book does not outstay its welcome, despite the author's unhurried style, which allows the characters time to develop, it is short and pithy.

A rather standard horror plotline is saved from cliche by the characters' believable reactions to the unfolding events, and by the convincing, well drawn setting.

A lovable rogue is our hero,a slightly dodgy antiques dealer with a perhaps too useful group of friends: it really is too convenient that he happends to know a man in the local pub who can get him a taxidermist, cat burglar or doctor on demand as and when needed by the storyline. Similarly, as the book ends a gang of religious Ghostbusters appear to assist.

All in all though, this well written and very readable work can be forgiven for taking an odd shortcut.

I wonder if the author had the idea for the book when musing "I wonder what would hapen if Lovejoy met Lovecraft...?" We can only hope so.

The Wheatstone Pond may be short-lived, but is told with a dry wit and competent realism that you don't normally find in super natural stories. It is similar to John Wyndham's approach to stories of this nature, which focuses more on the characters and their reaction to the events of the book, rather than the events themselves. Westall adds his own sense of a dull and listless London to the mix, ditching the bustling city atmosphere of thrillers and action novels and describing the quiet streets and buildings of residential areas in a way the reader can relate to. It's sets the mood perfectly for this bleak but homely story of residents as a nearby pond is drained by local authorities. Most Londoners will feel right at home with this, and should find it a subtly chilling yet pleasant read.

Robert Westall is an author i always come back to. In his books is something of everything! This is a story about a strange pond that hides dark secrets beneath its murky waters. When i raed this book i was dying to read more. The Discovery of something strange in a box sparks of a series of events. Is the antiques dealers partner to be trusted and is she all that she seems. What Has happened in the pond and will history repeat itself. READ ON. The book starts of slow but hten it picks up and becomes very intresting. Worth the poor start.
Robert writes yet another good book WEll DONE
