Review

"The fact that this book has reached its fifth edition speaks for itself. In its new format, it uses a more clinical approach, which will appeal to modern students and their clinically oriented teachers. the first and only choice for all those pathologists who are still teaching microscopic pathology to their medical students." - Doody's Review, 4 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsory if you want to understand pathology! 1 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This pathology book starts from first principles. The first section outlines basic pathological processes like infection, inflammation and other cellular responses right from the fundamentals to the more complicated bits. I really like that all the images are large and very high quality. Also, the images are labelled well throughout the text and the "key to figures", which appears on every double page spread, are handy too. This makes following the every part of disease development on the images very straightforward and intuitive.

The second section of the text is where common clinical conditions are addressed. This is where the book makes a fantastic accompaniment to core pathology texts like Stevens, Reid or Underwood, where the fundamentals can often be overlooked. Likewise, Wheater's Functional Histology is a great adjunct for students who want to focus more on the preclinical histology.

Overall, this book is clearly aimed squarely at medical students, with very easy to follow text and diagrams and revision-friendly reviews at the end of each chapter too. I couldn't have studied pathology without the fundamentals this book offers. A must have text if you want to truly understand pathology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book... 13 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
Despite the change in authorship and the rewording of the title, the book still manages to live up to its reputation. There are 100's of very high definition quality pictures throughout the book, allowing you to see what is needed. The way the book is laid out in two major sections is very good Section 1. is basic pathology and section 2 is body systems pathology. Some of the chapters have been rewritten and some of them have been just updated. This text is a very good start to pathology in your early pre clinical years. Pathology still feels me with dread, however the way this book presents its self helps, remove some of my anxieties. This is a very good book to have as a start to pathology learning. The only thing I feel is missing is some clinical boxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative pictures 17 Feb 2013
By Mangoes
Format:Paperback
I used this book to mainly complete a histology assignment. Of course there's also the supplementary functional histology book that may be used, but I particularly found this book more useful when writing up my assignment. Although there were good pictures and text about pathology of diseases, it would have been useful if normal tissue was compared to the abnormal ones. Obviously there were various other sources you could use for comparison, but it would have been useful to have pictures of normal tissue, which clearly differentiate from the abnormal ones. Compared to other pathology books, I thought this book was more concise for studying cell pathology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank the Lord for this book 26 Nov 2012

Med School is tough but every now and then a useful tool comes along to ease the pain. Wheater's is one of those tools. Wheater's has truly great Atlases for Histology & Pathology. I bring both to my Pathomorphology labs. Wheater's Basic Pathology has really great, full color images of the pathology slides you're most likely to encounter during class. Each picture is labeled with the different structures you need to know. The text provides a short, succinct summary of the most important facts. This book is no Robbin's Pathology, it doesn't focus on text. It focuses on only images, so it's great if you have labs based on looking at slides. This book saves me during lab when I don't know what to look for or if the pictures in the prof's power points aren't labeled. I always bring along my Wheater's Atlas of Histology to compare what normal tissue looks like. Wheater's is also a great review right before tests. I highly recommend this book to anyone taking Pathology, it's a great complement to Robbins (or Goljan's). In this day and age you can find images online, but if you like having something physical you can bring to class and don't want to waste countless hours searching for properly labeled slides online, get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent histopathology reference 15 Oct 2011
By Nakira - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm using this book for histopathology during my second year of med school and as a reference for the future. My pathology professor recommended it for its excellent images and easy to understand accompaning text. He was completely correct. What I really like about this book is that it gives me additional images to look at that are clearly labelled and very high quality. I also like that the book has a LOT of images, not just 1 per page with a vast majority of text like some other "atlas and text" references. But there is still enough text to explain the images in a clear and easily understandable way. Has helped me make sense of histo so much this year. It's also a pretty thin book for the amount of material it contains and is very well organized so I can find things easily. This means that I can bring it to class with me if I want without carrying a 2 ton brick in my backpack.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great for US med student 27 April 2013

Really good book for a medical student, particularly if you are a US medical student.

Even though it's pretty off the radar and not on everyone's top list of study materials (like Goljan, Pathoma, BRS, etc.), it actually has a ton of high yield Path material for Step 1. The histopath micrographs are correlated with clinical descriptions in a nice way. The end of each chapter has useful tables. Use it as you go along with each organ system in Path.

Anyway if your interested or studying path I recomend it for a read.
