Here is the letter I wrote to the editor Liz Castro to express my thanks for having produced such a fantastic book.

I am writing simply to express the pleasure I have taken in reading What's Up With Catalonia and the joy in knowing that there are other non-Catalans out there who feel a similar and perhaps inexplicable connection to the country. I first discovered Catalonia a few years ago after moving into a flat in Glasgow with a Scottish Catalan and after spending a few weeks with him and his friends I started to learn the language. I have since devoted a great deal time to the language and the people and now I plan to take great enjoyment spending my final year of university at Glasgow writing a dissertation on the role of food in catalan national identity.

The book that you and your collaborators have written has been a fantastic help in better understanding Catalonia since it deals with a great many subjects for which, despite my best efforts and many long evenings spent with my catalan friends, my knowledge of the language did not always suffice. For that I thank you.

Come 2014 I hope we will see two countries reborn into Europe.

The style with which the original Catalan texts were translated into English may be a little shoddy, but the book does help to give the foreign reader an overview of the situation in Catalonia from different perspectives.

While present-day Catalonian society is indeed very diverse -few places in Europe have seen their population double in the space of fifty years due to an influx of population from other places -southern Spain, but also North Africa, South America and Eastern Europe in the case of Catalonia- Catalan society is remarkably cohesive in spite of its plurality. So while approximately 20% of the population feels exclusively Spanish, a high percentage of the population of non-Catalan origin has joined the mainstream grass-roots movement of civil society for independence. This movement -which is unprecedented in scale and drive in recent European history- is fuelled by a peremptory need for dignity, fair treatment, and equal representation as citizens of a free state within the European Union. This runs against the course of events in the history of the Spanish State, still today dominated by a Castilian oligarchy permeating all spheres of power and holding a supreme disdain for the Catalan identity, language, and socioeconomic structure. The illusion of a plural, federal, democratic Spain has vanished over the least thirty years as it has become gradually more evident that Catalans are nearly absent from the Central Government, the judiciary, the military, and the extractive elite at the head of the major corporations created after the privatisation of former state monopolies, the industrial-military complex, and the major banks -all based in Madrid, except for La Caixa.

Fascinating opportunity to read what different intellectuals, politicians, writers and other public figures think about one of the most beautiful areas I know- Barcelona and Catalonia. It's hard for those that don't live here to understand what motivates so many people to fight for the right to self-determination, and it's not often you can find current information in English to talk about both the history and culture of this north-eastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. This book has been a wonderful way to share Catalonia's current situation with friends and family, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand the language, history and future of the Catalans.

A great book to discover the current situation in Catalonia. Written by different authors you can hear different points of view supported by good arguments.
