Book Description

If you write a review of this book, please don't give away Jody's secret! It's hard enough being one half of the world's least identical twins, without both of you falling for the same guy. Jolene's turned flirting into a fine art, but Jody? Not so much. And as if a twinny love triangle wasn't messy enough . . . there's something nobody knows about Jody Barton. Something BIG. Told with the trademark warmth and laugh-out-loud humour of the much-loved LOTTIE BIGGS books, this is a book that will make you think, with a gobsmacking twist you won't believe. Shortlisted for the Costa Prize

About the Author

Hayley Long lives in Norwich with her husband and a rabbit called Irma. Sometimes she is an English teacher, and the rest of the time she writes novels. They're the sort of novels which will make you laugh a bit and then make you feel sad a bit and then make you laugh again. Sort of like this: hahahaBOOHOOhahaha. Hayley also likes biscuits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totes awesome, yeah? 19 May 2012
Format:Paperback
What a fresh and fantastic read! I think the main thing with this novel is to expect the unexpected.

Long once again delights her readers with a beautiful narrative style that entices her readers and leaves them hooked throughout the entire novel. The characters are impressively and sensitively handled, and the plot line has more twists and turns than the Jubilee line. Yet, there is never a time when the reader feels left 'on the platform'-we accompany Jody Barton as the protagonist experiences the highs and many lows of the teenage years. I was utterly gripped throughout the whole novel, and I know you will be too.

If you love quadratic equations, The Doors and River Phoenix, then this book is for you. If you don't, then this book's STILL for you as I defy anyone not to feel delighted by its innocent and cheery charm, while sensitively discussing some weighty issues.

Keep writing, Ms Long, as we definitely want to keep reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Read! 13 July 2012
By Missy
Format:Paperback
Two twins - Jody and Jolene. Completely different. If being a twin wasn't hard enough, both of them falling in love with the same guy is just going to make matters a whole lot worse! But to add to all of that is Jody Barton's MASSIVE secret that nobody knows about.
Hayley Long comes back again after her Lottie Biggs series with an AMAZING book! If you've read Lottie Biggs series, you'll be getting twice as much excitement and joy reading What's Up With Jody Barton!
Everyone should be rushing to buy this book that has tons of laughter and a HUGE secret from Jody which is going to make your jaw hit all the way to the floor.
I'm a huge fan of Hayley Long and wasn't disappointed at all with What's Up With Jody Barton!
Every teen should own a copy of this book. I couldn't put it down as soon as I got it! Such an easy book to read and I loved it. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars When life throws you curve balls... 26 May 2012
By Steve Benner TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It is nice to see that while the "Lottie Biggs" books may have finally run their course, author Hayley Long still has plenty of delightful writing up her sleeve. "What's up with Jody Barton" is her latest sortie into Serious Teen Issues, written in the same endearing style as "Lottie Biggs is NOT Mad" and its two sequels, "Lottie Biggs is NOT Desperate" and "Lottie Biggs is NOT Tragic" and set in North London, rather than Lottie's Cardiff.

Jody and Jolene Barton are 15 year-old twins who, much to Jody's distress, have both fallen head over heels for the same boy. For Jolene, who has been out with more boys than Jody (or even Jolene) can count, being in love with a boy is no big thing. Jody, on the other hand, has never gone out with anybody before and has never, until now, thought of boys that way. Discovering that you are, indeed, interested in boys -- although only the one that your sister is also desperate to make her own boyfriend -- is a sure fire way to mess with any teenager's head and Jody's head is pretty soon epically messed up. Even prime numbers and the music of The Doors begin to lose some of their glamour...

Jody Barton is every bit as naively loveable as Lottie Biggs and comes across as an archetypical gauche teenager in need of a hefty dose of self-confidence. Hayley Long's books are never merely amusing tales for tales' sake, though, and each invariably carries a serious main theme, although this can be a long time emerging.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it 20 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
What's up with Jody Barton is a fantastic YA contemporary read which I enjoyed thoroughly. It's fun, original and a breath of fresh air in the current UK YA market which has been flooded with paranormal and dystopian fiction.

This review is deliberately short mainly because I don't want to give again thing away or spoil this book for anyone else as I would have been devastated had anyone done that to me. As a warning on that front do not whatever you do flick through this book ahead as you might glean something you don't want to know even without meaning to.

The thing I love about this book the most is Jody's unique voice. Jody is funny and I love Jody's relationship with with Jolene. I love how Jody is a maths geek but also quite cool with it, even without realising it, and I loved following Jody's story. I loved how the story had Jody's doodles added in every so often and how the size of the text was used to convey Jody's emotions and feelings as the story progressed.

I loved the messages this book had. It had brilliant messages about being yourself and not going with the crowd just because you feel like you should. The cyberbullying element in this book is really poignant and also quite powerful for youngsters in seeing how Jody deals with it. I also like the message the book has about family and family values. I loved the Barton family and seeing the relationship between the family unit. I particularly loved their parents and seeing the way in which they treated their twins.

All in all a thoughtful and funny read that I'd highly recommend.

Well written young adult novel with a very thought provoking theme. This book can be read by teenagers and adults as both could connect with it. Good characterisation.
