What better way for writer-star Woody Allen to cash in on the success of What's New Pussycat? than to write a quickie exploitation comedy that makes fun of quickie exploitation films? In What's Up Tiger Lily? his actors dub new dialogue onto a ridiculous Japanese spy extravaganza. Allen's exquisite sense of the absurd is in fine form as espionage professionals pursue a top-secret recipe for egg salad. At one point during the planning of a break-in, a spy unfolds a map of their quarry's residence, explaining that the man "lives here". "He lives on that small piece of paper?" questions one of the henchmen. It's that silly. But it's often uproarious. Louise Lasser, Allen's former wife is among the voice actors. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, silly 'first' film from Woody Allen 16 Jun 2010
By K. Gordon TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Many years before 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' popularized making fun of bad films to a whole new generation, Woody Allen - in his first 'directing' gig - had a field day completely re-dubbing this unintentionally silly Japanese spy film into a very intentionally silly comedy about the desperate search for the recipe for the perfect egg salad.

It has a few dry spells, and I thought the spliced in musical numbers by 'The Lovin' Spoonful' (not Allen's choice, apparently) were pretty embarrassing in a now dated attempt to make the film 'hip'.

But where it's funny, it's very, very funny. And not only are there a slew of choice new lines, but the voice talents are all excellent, really capturing the awful, stiff voice acting we all got used to hearing in cheaply dubbed imports.

A one-of-a kind comedy, and worth checking out if you're in a silly mood, or are any sort of fan of Woody Allen's non-sequiters and wit. Yes, it's adolescent compared with where Allen would go just a few years later, but that doesn't mean it's not a lot of fun!

So the premise is simple: Allen saw a 1964 Japanese spy movie called "Kokusai himitsu keisatsu: Kagi no kagi" ("International Secret Police: Key of Keys", then decided to dub over it in English for comedy purposes. So the premise now becomes that the lead James Bond style Interpol Agent Tatsuya Mihashi, is now trying to track down a secret egg salad recipe. If you love quick and witty one liners and absurdist, sometimes purile, sometimes surreal humour, then this is a great film, and very well done. There are those memorable lines that the lead character uses when in a punch up (initially towards a black assassin)l "Roman dogs", "Russian Swine","Spartan pigs" etc. But they are simply the most memorable (because they are repeated) and most quoted lines. The moment where Bond meets a prostitute and exclaims "Mother!" and the following moments ( i won't spoil it) are very funny indeed and had me howling. And i was engaged all the way through the film. It also made me want to see the original, as the movie was well shot, stylistic and there were also some beautiful actresses in the movie. If you are a fan of Woody Allen, badly dubbed Japanese movies, or James Bond spy movies, then you owe it to yourself to see this film once in your life. The most amazing thing is that this has not been done more often; after all, what bad movie or movie without subtitles could be improved or recreated by redoing the dialogue? The fun feels adlibbed, quick-witted and clever and genuinely like everyone was enjoying themselves, and that to me, makes it more endearing. For those who say 'this is possibly Allen's film', I say poppycock. I certainly enjoyed this film a lot more that most of Allen's efforts of the last 10 years which have mostly been disappointing and unengaging in my humble opinion. Ignore the more intellectual reviews and film academic critic types, and have a chuckle, and enjoy Woody having fun. Check it out!

3.0 out of 5 stars For Woody Diehards and the Late Night Crowd 20 Oct 2008
By Philoctetes TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
What's Up, Tiger Lily?, is so unexpected within the Allen filmography, it can't help but have its novelty value. A bad Jap film from the 1960s, presented with a special english-language soundtrack by Woody, it is a weird crime drama transformed into a contest for possession for the best egg-salad recipe. Really.

Honestly, it's junk, but I did laugh out loud several times, and I should think admirers of bad cinema will enjoy the concept of overdubbing a bad foreign film and actually making it worse.
