Book Description

7 Oct 2010 Spot Sound Books

What's That Noise, Spot? is a sound book featuring Eric Hill's classic character, Spot

Young Spot fans will find plenty of fun and lots to discover in this large-format 18-button sound book. Each page shows Spot in a different scene which toddlers can recognise - at home, at the farm, at school, at the seaside and at the park. Sound symbols indicate which buttons to press to make the sound effects for each location, and words are labelled to encourage young children to identify familiar objects and begin to explore the world. The book provides a wondeful interactive treat for children and adults to share.

'Spot is one of the essential experiences of childhood.' Parents magazine

Eric Hill was born in North London and lived there for many years. He started his artistic career as an art studio messenger and from there went on to become a cartoonist and eventually an art director at a leading advertising agency. In 1978 Eric made up a story about a small puppy to read to his son at bedtime and Spot was born. The success of his first bestselling lift-the-flap classic 'Where's Spot?' in 1980 convinced him to become a full-time author. Eric currently resides in France.

Don't miss any of the Spot lift-the-flap classics:

Spot's First Walk; Spot's Birthday Party; Spot's First Christmas; Spot Goes to School; Spot Goes on Holiday; Spot Goes to the Circus; Spot Goes to the Farm; Spot's First Easter; Spot's Baby Sister; Spot Stays Overnight; Spot Goes to the Park; Spot Goes to a Party; Spot Bakes a Cake; Spot Visits his Grandparents; Spot Can Count; Who's There, Spot?; Spot Says Goodnight

More About the Author

Born in 1927, Eric Hill is the creator of Spot, 'the world's favourite puppy'. At 16 he joined an art studio, where he was encouraged to draw cartoons in his spare time. He particularly enjoyed drawing aircraft, and it was the markings of planes that later came to influence the design of Spot, reflected in the spots on his body and the tip of his tail. Eric also spent time in the air force, and worked in a large advertising agency as a graphic designer. In 1976 Eric's son Christopher was born and by the time he was two, Eric was making up stories about the adventures of a small puppy to read to him at bedtime and Spot was born!

The design of the books was inspired by an advertising flyer Eric had devised involving a flap covering an amusing picture. When Eric showed this to Christopher he saw how responsive he was to the idea and incorporated it into his book. Although initially created just as a story to please his son, Where's Spot? was actually published as a children's book in 1980 and started a new publishing concept of 'interactive books for babies'.

Eric Hill was awarded an OBE for services to Children's Literature in 2008.

Format:Board book
I bought this for my 1 year old daughter, having seen it elsewhere at a much higher price this book was a bargain, there are 10 pages (sides) all hard board and each page is crammed full of different objects and animals, brilliant for when your little one is learning new words and what different objects are in the home and out and about. Plus it has the added bonus of the sounds down the side - to be honest this book would still be great even if it did not have the sounds. i am very pleased with it

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book 4 Mar 2012
By Em
Format:Board book
My daughter loves spot and was starting to make noises so I thought this would be a winner. I wasn't disappointed. From the moment we opened it she loved the noises. The pictures are bright and captivating and follow on from other spot books. Well worth the money. Why 4 stars then? Some of the sounds are a little obscure. A clock? A kettle? A trampoline? A wonderful book nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice quality 5 Jan 2012
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
A nice quality noisy book: nice colourful pictures and solidly made. Great fun for young children both to read or just press buttons. I particularly like the fact that when you press a different button, you don't have to wait for the previous sound to finish before it will work.

2.0 out of 5 stars not impressed 31 July 2012
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
i seem to be in the minority here but i don't think this book is impressive, the kettleWhat's That Noise, Spot? for example is not a modern day kettle so my daughter would not match up the picture with the real thing. Also some of the main noises like the sheep on the farm page are tiny and in the back ground where as they should be big and in the front. she has much better noise books but for the price its not to bad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spot sound books 25 Oct 2013
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
Excellent for vocabulary development and matching pictures and sounds. Each page is well-constructed in that it covers all the objects in that environment. A book that can be used with older children for teaching reading.
Perhaps one or two of the sounds could have been more realistic. I am not sure I would have included wild animals on the farm page as it could be a little confusing for very youngl children but you could teach "odd one out" much later, I suppose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers 17 Sep 2011
Format:Board book
I purchased this book for my 15 month old daughter who loves Spot. I was not disappointed with this book. It is much larger than I thought and is great for teaching new things. The sounds are excellent. Only one thing I think is slightly confusing about the book - there is a bird sound and a seagull sound so she sometimes gets confused when I ask where the bird is. Overall a great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not noisy ... 8 May 2014
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
Book itself was received in excellent condition and very well packed. The noisy bits were NOT noisy until I changed the batteries. Now it should be a noisy book that our little one will really enjoy. The sound makes it all the more interesting and who doesn't love Spot !

Very nice pictures throughout, shame about some sounds which seem to be computer generated rather than a real cat / pig sound.
