Biography

Dave Brubeck was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds. With a career that spanned over six decades, his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation.

Born into a musical family in Concord, California-- his two older brothers were also professional musicians--he began ... Read more in Amazon's Dave Brubeck Store

This old man, he play one...and one...and one... 26 Jan. 2003
By William E. Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Brubeck recorded this in 1997 at age 77, but you'd never know that from the lively and fresh music on this disc. Each is a Brubeck composition from the 1990's, and all of them are good. His quartet of that year might not be quite as strong as the famous bunch in the 50's and 60's, but it would take a fellow musician to detect it. If you like Dave, don't think that he wasn't still great in his later years. I found my copy at a bargain price, which makes it even more enjoyable, but I think any Brubeck or jazz piano fan would find it a good deal at the full price. Fast, slow and inbetween, with lots of time for the other instruments in addition to the piano, this CD was a wonderful suprise to me. One you can listen to several times in a row (it's 57 minutes) without getting bored.

Don't Believe "Jazz Times"! 17 Jun. 2008
By Legalrec - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I don't know who wrote that tired, sour, jaded review of this album for the Jazz Times that amazon shows, but he/she must've been having an off day. This is a delightful group of songs, played by thoroughly competent musicians. Yes, it's totally mainstream but it's well done. If you want something melodic and well-played, that you can put on when you're having drinks or dinner with friends, this is the ticket.

So What's Different? 5 Jun. 2013
By Frenchy - Published on Amazon.com

That should be the album title. If you're expecting more of the classic '60s Brubeck, you may be disappointed. By the way, don't let the album cover fool you. It looks like any of the "Take Five" series covers and can be easily misconstrued as more music of that ilk. It is NOT! This album plays like late '40s and 1950s jazz reminiscent of Mingus, Monk, Coltrane, Parker et.al. This is good jazz but not necessarily Brubeck jazz. The album runs the gamut from slightly discordant to reasonably mellow. The piano can be a little too loud (though the classic Brubeck style is self-evident) and the sax a little too squeaky. The flute, while not normally found in a Brubeck ensemble, works well. I think that listeners who know only the "Take Five" albums or are conditioned to the unique signature of Paul Desmond's sax, will have some difficulty accepting this album as something by Brubeck; but for those of us who listen to Jazz across a broader spectrum, it is one more example of the genius that was Dave Brubeck.
As good as Time Out 26 Mar. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Dave Brubeck in this CD is just as good as he was in his Best Seller "Time Out" thirty years ago. All the tracks are melodious yet upbeat. I am very impressed, at his age, he is still so creative and skillful in his wonderful music.
If you like Brubeck's other works, you'll not be disappointed in this one.

Buen disco, aunque algo tibio 1 Feb. 2010
By E. D. Perez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
