Not what I was expecting!,
By Fuficius Fango (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Whats Going On (Audio CD)
See my review of Buck Jump for a more general description of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (ddbb).
What's Going On is a "remake" of the Marvin Gaye record of the same name. I was a bit apprehensive whilst waiting for it to arrive, but I needn't have been: I was always a little bit uneasy with Gaye's album, as I felt that there was too much incongruity between the political/ecological content and its Soul style (whereas Let's Get It On was the perfect MG album for me). But DDBB's remake was motivated by Hurricane Katrina (which had important ecological and political ramifications), and they have made important changes, e.g. rap vocals in addition to the sometimes funkier sometimes jazzier style. I do like it more than the original. Track 9, a rap version of Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) is also covered on Buck Jump in a more Mardi Gras style. Some of this style remains in What's Going On thanks to the sousaphone emphasising the bass line. All in all, I love it.

Truly "What's Going On"...,
By H. E. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: What's Going on (Audio CD)
Combining superlative musicianship, the inspiration of Marvin Gaye's original album, the immediacy of the new arrangements, contributions from legendary guest artists, and the enormity of the calamity (Hurricane Katrina) that inspired this undertaking, this is a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L recording!
And not just because of the good intentions. Anyone who is in tune with Marvin's vibe ie anyone who's got S-O-U-L, will appreciate and enjoy the groove on this jam. If I'm mixing metaphors, I apologize. Just a caucasian dude with a lifelong love of soul. 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful:

Since my son plays the tuba a friend suggested this cd to me and I think it is wonderful. He makes the tuba sound like a guitar!! we love it.

Great vibe!,

Good music and great horns!!! I've listened to their other albums and this one hits the spot for me. I think the genre description 'JazzFunk' is a good indicator, but not totally accurate - never-the-less - good funky vibes.
