4.0 out of 5 stars Spookily Good, 9 Sep 2007
By Winters Kiss (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
'M.J. Holliday's a medium with a message-her business is helping lost souls cross over to the other side. But what if the ghosts want to stay put?
M.J. Holliday has two rules. One, she and her partner, Gilley Gillespie, work alone; and two, she doesn't date clients. But when handsome Dr. Steven Sable needs her help, the specter-spotting sleuth is ready to break both of her rules. It seems the hot doc's grandfather jumped from the roof of the family lodge in an apparent suicide. But Dr.Sable knows in his bones it was foul play, and strange things keep happening at the lodge. He'll hire M.J. and Gilley-but only if he can come along. Hey, the duo needs the money-and looking at eye candy all weekend doesn't sound too bad either...But once they reach the lodge, the three realise they're dealing with more ghosts than just Grandpa Sable's. And the spooks keep playing nasty tricks on their human visitors. To the untrained eye, it would appear that ghouls just want to have fun. But M.J. knows they're communicating their distress-and it's up to her to figure out why...'

The blurb does not do this book justice. 'What's a ghoul to do?' is the first novel in what is an engaging new series.
A supernatural mystery series. It's edgy, funny and completely gripping.
M.J. is a great 'narrator'. She's clever, witty, stubborn and has a vunerable side which is compelling. Gilley is funny and a great secondary character to M.J. I also loved 'Teeko', M.J.'s other friend and of course Dr.Steven Sable. They are all interesting characters that I am glad will be in the sequel, 'Demons are a ghoul's best friend'.
I love a good mystery, especially one that isn't obvious, that leaves you wondering throughout the novel...add ghosts and that's one helluva ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars What's A Ghoul To Do?, 14 Jul 2008

This was more of a kind iof Paranormal chick lit and I loved it!

MJ is a ghost hunter and I loved reading about that side of things as the author is also a medium so that was quite interesting. She works alongside her partner Gilley and they help souls cross over etc. Think Most Haunted (though not as crap LOL) with better characters!!

Dr Sable's english is not so good and some of the things he comes out with were really quite funny! Of course there is a romantic twist (MJ & Dr Sable) which was pretty much predictable (well it wasn't going to happen between MJ & Gilley) and the ending was quite cutesy!

This was a fun, light read nothing too intense here and MJ was a great character - this is the first book I read of Victoria Laurie and she has written another Psychic series as well as the follow up to this which I definitely will be reading.

So if you love anything ghostly and paranormal thats not too intense you'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A promising start for a wonderful new series, 16 April 2007
By Rena Ruadh (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews

I have read and enjoyed all 4 previous books by Victoria Laurie in her Abby Cooper series. So, when I saw this book advertised, I bought it without waiting to see what it was about and I was not disappointed. A wonderful read, the book kept me entertained from start to finish. It is a nice touch that Ms Laurie has introduced readers to MJ Holliday in her Abby Cooper series. There one could already see that MJ Holliday was a very interesting character and it is great that she now has her own series. The only thing is --- why do we have to wait till 2008 for the next book...? More, please, more!

Light-hearted and not so spooky but made up for by the heroine (?) of the story. There is a good family murder storyline within the ghostbusting scenarios but the poor English of... Read more
