Ever ordered raw chicken platter or cow's stomach when you couldn't read the menu? I have, and it's a very unpleasant experience eating it with the whole staff watching and laughing.
With 'What's What in Japanese Restaurants' in your pocket this will never happen to you. Robb Satterwhite has written an indispensable book for anyone travelling to Japan for the 1st or even the 30th time. The book is divided into sections detailing regional styles, types of food, etc., and each section gives the Japanese characters that you will find on the menu, a transliteration into Roman characters and an explanation of the dish. He talks about diferent types of eating places, from standup noodle stalls to the VERY exclusive Japanese traditional restaurant. Included also are useful phrases for dining and there's even a section on drinking. He touches on etiquette and finishes with a glossary of terms. This is the most comprehensive book on eating in Japan that I have come across in more than 20 years of travelling to and fro. An absolute must buy.

Good book with plenty of useful and cultural info. As for the practical side of it...I found some lack of dishes on "japanese fast food chains" like yoshinoya where I coudn't find how to pronounce some kanji (although you can always point at the pictures as a last resort). Overall a good buy, but give a it good read before you arrive to Japan. Knowing the chapters on the book will speed up the process of finding and ordering the dishes.

This book is comprehensive and incredibly useful for those who do not speak japanese but would still like to get the most out of their trip, at least from a culinary point of view. I fully recommend it. You will discover types of dishes you have not heard of before and will have the confidence to go into restaurants without english-speakers or english menus.

Very useful - wish I had it when working out in Japan, but sadly it wasn't printed till I got back !
It is conveniently (nearly) pocket sized for carrying around, especially if you are not glued to the internet for information.
The book is very informative, giving etiquette advice too - very essential if you do not want to be the classic clunky foreigner.
The lists of entires under the various styles of cooking are in Romaji (abc version of Japanese word) , then Japanese, then English - in an easy to read typeface.
Would recommend this small book if going to Japan either for a holiday or for work.
