Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you're only going to buy one Pop Idol product this season, make it What My Heart Wants To Say, the debut from series runner-up, Gareth Gates. It's idol album number two (three if you count Rik Waller's), and it's released just in time for the Christmas shopping frenzy.

Boasting a hefty 16 tracks with the singles all tucked at the beginning, this is hard going at first but despite the inevitable fillers, it's a pretty consistent collection. Gareth and his team have covered most bases for their target audience, doing pastiches of artists such as Atomic Kitten, Kylie, Westlife and most notably (where Gareth excels) George Michael. "Sentimental" is a fine funk-tinged pop song but could easily be mistaken for classic George on a dark night. This is surpassed by the standout "Good Thing", which is also influenced by the Wham! man but has a touch of the soulfulness that Will Young could have done with on his debut.

"(I've Got No) Self Control" is a great piece of disco pop that should keep the Kylie kids happy and Gareth (whether assisted or not) sounds in great voice showing a lot more confidence than he did during the earlier part of 2002. So that's the positive side, the downside is that a fair few of the 16 songs are mere fillers where similar results could be attained with a cheap keyboard's demo button. Nevertheless, there are enough decent songs to make it worthwhile. --Georgina Collins

Impressive Debut 29 Oct 2002

Dont be fooled into thinking this album is purely suitable for all die hard Gareth fans, there is plenty for everyone on this album! It starts with the singles we have all heard before and from then on just gets better and better! Joint writing credits go to Gareth for the track 'sentimental' its an up-beat pop song and after just one listen you will find yourself singing along. Stand out track would have to be the brilliant 'good thing'again its an up-tempo number, its so catchy and a real feel good song! Of course you couldnt have a Gareth album without some ballads, one of the best would have to be the last track 'thats when you know' or the fantastic title track 'what my heart wants to say'. However you would be wrong if you expected an album full of slow and boring ballads, this album is a real mix! Gareths voice sounds fantastic and he really puts his all into every song on here. Ok so this album may not be one of the best albums of all time but in truth who would be expecting that?? Nobody knows how long Gareth is going to last in the music business but it cant be denied that he is is very talented and this album is a very impressive debut! Well done Gareth!

To be fair I'm 23 (so not the usual Gates follower). Bizarre, I know. I recently caught him rehearsing for his UK Tour and was impressed. So, I bought this and thought I'd give him/it a chance.
Basically its got OTT Westlife-o-rama (that always manages to pull you in) and Jackson 5, George Michaelesque killer tunes! Thats right folks the one with the stutter is a poptastique nutter!

Tunes to watch out for (incase they beat you to the floor) are:
Anyone Of Us
Sentimental
Good Thing
I've Got No Self Control
Alive

And for the touchy feelers out there:
What My Heart Wants To Say
With You All The Time
That's When You Know.

The only criticism here is that instead of 16 tracks S Records could've put out 10/11 with the rest as b-sides on the singles. But overall. Excellent debut! Pop Idol has provided us with two interesting new talents. Watch this space.

Gareth was the perfect pop star with a great voice stage presence & the ability to convey emotion through his singing.
If he had been well-managed his career at the top could have lasted much longer - really it just needed one person to have the vision of the star he could be, rather than Simon Cowell with his highly questionable record of identifying and manageing quality acts.
His comeback album which flopped seemed to be over-managed - too many people.
It was also the classic case of a star wanting to write thier own material - nothing wrong with this; but at the same time, nothing wrong with being a brilliant interpreter of other people's brilliant songs (Dusty!)
Gareth - we miss you and love you.
I think we have also not seen the last of you!
