Product Description

Product Description

Carrie Preston is desperately trying to stand up to her pushy family and failing badly. When her favourite aunt dies she retreats into her favourite book, Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South, only to find herself suddenly stuck in that story and seriously messing with her favourite romance of all time!

When Carrie's kooky aunt bequeaths her a pair of amethyst earrings in her will and says that they will grant her her hearts desire, she has no idea that she will end up in the middle of the 19th century, slap bang in the middle of her favourite book. With nothing but the clothes on her back and her rucksack, she is taken in by the Hale family and soon finds herself living in the dirty, smoky industrial town of Milton.

The only bright spot on the horizon is that she gets to meet the romantic hero of the story, John Thornton but it's not long before he starts setting his sights on her rather than Margaret Hale! Far from living her dream, she is appalled to realise that she is about to destroy the greatest romance since Elizabeth Bennett met Mr Darcy!

“North & South was like chocolate to her; her comfort food in literary form, a safe haven she could dip into whenever she needed a respite from her troubles or even just a distraction for a while.”

More About the Author

Cat Winchester was born in East Anglia. After her wanderlust finally abated, she settled in Edinburgh with her family, three dogs and a teacup dragon.

Despite suffering from undiagnosed dyslexia, Cat always had a desire to tell stories and indeed, credits her own and other people's tales for getting her through some of the toughest times in her life. Thanks to her dyslexia though, she never dreamed that she could become an author.

She insists that credit for her books also go to her editor and proofreader, whom she describes as 'the nicest grammar Nazi that you could ever hope to meet'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Up and down 11 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I did really enjoy this book and will read it more than once, however I think the author needs to be sure she has done all the right research if she is going to write a historical book. The part about alcohol not be used for deep cuts wasn't true, after all North and South was set in a time when Florence Nightingale was trying to stop infections and Elizabeth Gaskell had met Florence herself. I think a little editing and the book would be perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted and surprisingly funny 15 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wanted to read something with that North and South essence but with an additional element of intrigue. What You Wish For provided just that. It was highly amusing at various points and it was lovely to see an alternative humorous side of Mr Thornton developed. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the 21st century clashes that were depicted, especially when Thornton discovers a particular item in Cassie's handbag!

I really enjoyed this book. As the author promised - it didn't change my life or enrich my soul but it did entertain me for a while and I will certainly read it again.
