Book Description

14 April 2011

A heartwarming and witty novel about female friendships and how they will outlast any man from the author of The Secrets Women Keep

Bea, Kate and Ellen have always known that they can depend on each other, no matter what. But as each reaches a new phase in their life, their bond is put to the test.

Recently-divorced Bea's job is in jeopardy as she grapples with a new boss and her power-hungry younger colleagues. At home she has to deal with a stroppy teenage son and the gaping hole left by her ex-husband. Feisty, impulsive and never one to give up, she throws herself back onto the dating scene. Her friends will hold her steady.

Stressed-out Kate contends with an empty nest now that her children have left home, a frantic pace at work as a GP and the growing realisation that her marriage has definitely lost its shine. Reliable, hard-working, how can she find the energy to keep going? At least her friends will lift her spirits.

Then Ellen, who has devoted herself to her two children and her small art gallery for the last ten years since her beloved husband died, falls head over heels in love with Oliver.

When Oliver forces Ellen to re-evaluate everything about herself and her future, so Bea and Kate are driven further away from their friend and from each other as they react differently to this unfamiliar stranger in their midst.

A novel about love and life and the issues that face women today as they try to decide what they want – and come to realise what they really need…

4.0 out of 5 stars What Women Want 23 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
In this book we meet three women, one in the process of a divorce, one happily married but with her last child leaving home, and one who was widowed ten years ago and has spent the last ten years focusing on her children.

I felt the characters were all drawn very well. I loved Bea who is feisty and determined, but sometimes finds it hard to control her jealousy and has a few little insecurities. Kate comes across as loving but sensible. I felt for her when she was struggling with her empty nest and an ever distant husband. Finally, there is Ellen. I have to say I found her frustrating at times, but actually that's what makes the writing so excellent - that's the point - you're meant to be frustrated by her blindness to Oliver's deceptive nature! It's frustrating that she can't see through Oliver, but she thinks she is in love, and women will be able to relate to situations where you literally can't see the wood for the trees. Sometimes it takes a friend, and it needs to be your best friends otherwise you'll just close up and shut them out, to show you the truth. The descriptions of Ellen are written very well, especially when you think she's finally going to do something about Olive and turf him out on his ear, but then he'll do something (sometimes just look at her, or pull her close) and she'll melt into him.

I was suspicious of Oliver from the start, but I suppose the back of the book told me that something was going to go awry. I really liked the descriptions of him clicking his nails; its little things like that that really bring a book to life and for me this was one of them.

The interaction between characters is very clever.

5.0 out of 5 stars what women want - to read! 15 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Loved this book. I thought it was warm, funny and engaging with marvellous characters and a pacy, tight story-line. i've already bought copies for all my women friends who are a smidge older than me - the ones with the teenage kids! Thoroughly recommended, but if you're taking on holiday - be warned, you won't be able to put it down....

For a first book, this author surpassed my expectations, the book is witty, funny and enjoyable. There are parts to each character that you can see within yourself. My colleague also read this and could not put this down and identified with different parts of the characters than I did. This book is now going round the office. Cant wait to read her next book! What Women Want

3.0 out of 5 stars An easy read 17 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First book I've read in a while. Would say this is an easy read ~ Personally I think it's written for women aged 40+ as sadly, we can relate to the 'midlife crisis' that comes with age.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Women Want 26 Jan 2012
By Fleur
Format:Paperback
I adored this book. I love it that Fanny Blake is writing about older women having prospects after career disasters, finding love after marital ones, realising they are still attractive once the dust has settled. All is not lost after forty. The teenagers were wonderfully observed with humour and perception. Very engaging and uplifting. Looking forward to the next publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Settle Down For A Good Read 31 May 2011
By M. J. Saxton VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is one of those books that stops you sleeping: "I'll just read a bit more before I put the light out", of course you read a lot more.

Fanny Blake tells a great story.

You know those books that are about successful women in their twenties forging ahead with life and encountering its problems? Well, this is one of those but about women in their fifties and it makes for excellent reading. It is the maturity of the characters that is so well portrayed, they have the same insecurities as anyone else, but they also have the experience to deal with what life whacks them in the face with in a hugely believable way.

Bea is my favourite because she is feisty and has a tendency to let her mouth run away with her. It is so easy to empathise with Kate's life as a GP, the details of her day to day existence are heartfelt and that makes it so much more pognant when she and Paul decide to take their epic trip to Africa to see Sam. Poor Kate, you can see exactly why she fell for Oliver, but what a b***ard he is!

There's an element of detective novel amidst the adventures of these professional women. And there's a few laughs along the way: Bea's encounter with the desperately randy date - thank goodness she gets it right in the end. The chocolate references are really drool-making, too.

Buy this book, it is well worth the read, and I hope Fanny Blake has plenty more to follow.
