This has been an exceedingly helpful book for me to use in helping with my thesis... think I am clever ...not in the least - hence my gratitude to an author who grapples in a very very readable way of writing, with good examples and great source of referencing. He uses our history of places for human habitation and the verbal folklore work against each other and how we can reach a rational human understanding of how we have come to and where we are, in urban development and more. It really is a great read and such an enjoyment, compared to the wordy blah blah blah books I have had to endure through my studies. I am glad that studying has caused me to discover such an interesting book. Learnt a great amount of historical facts too that I never knew and enjoyed the then and now representation of the authors ease in making even me think outside the box!

This is an good book for those with an interest in heritage or landscaping. Lynch does tend to go off at a tangent some times but there are some very good ideas and striking points made. He challenges the perceptions of time and space/place that are ingrained in western cultures without being offensive or patronising. I like this book!

Fascinating look at the urban environment's role in our perception of time 24 Jan 2011
By Nicolai Michel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This (unique?) book looks into how humans perceive time, how our environment (especially cities) influences that perception, and how that environment can be modified to provide a better sense of time and place. Examples from around the world are used to illustrate Lynch's many thought-provoking ideas.
Although this is an academic text, it is very readable (even fun to read,) and mostly easily understood.
