Amazon Review

“When he took the job, Bill Roedy made an immediate and profound executive decision: He would take MTV and its core proposition that pop music was the universal lingua franca of youth, internationalize it and create a powerful vehicle for change, understanding and good--whilst also building a great business in the process. MTV has changed since then, so has the world, and Bill is one of those people responsible for that change. He is a remarkable man!”--Sir Bob Geldof

“It has been said many times that with great power comes great responsibility. Bill Roedy lived by that rule all 23 of his years at MTV Networks. He helped to build a global entertainment superpower, but along the way Bill educated the MTV generation and made them realize they had the power to change the world.”--Jon Bon Jovi

“Bill Roedy has been a tireless fighter in the battle against HIV/AIDs. As he relates in this book, and his life’s story reflects, one can make a profound difference in the greater community by bringing together their individual abilities and corporate resources. When this happens, the community, the corporation, and the individual all win.”--Kenneth Cole

“My friend Bill Roedy is a statesman, and adventurer, a wise man, a humanitarian and much more all rolled into one. His personal life and career has been exciting, productive, and beneficial to mankind. He continues to lead an incredible life and has always been a remarkable story teller. Fasten your seatbelt and read on, you’re in for a great experience.”--Seymour Stein, Co founder/Chairman Sire Records, Inducted Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2005

“Few things are more difficult than building a new business. From helping to sell HBO to mom and pop cable systems in the 1970’s and 80’s to establishing the MTV brand around the world, Bill Roedy has more experience in that art than anyone I know. Those people intending to do business internationally can learn a great deal by reading this book.”--Frank Biondi, Former President and CEO, Viacom

Review

‘… a phenomenal business success story.’  (ThirdSector.co.uk, June 2011). ‘… much of Roedy’s advice is not just about how to work but also about how to live.’  (The Lancet, June 2011). ‘Engrossing... a penetrative insight into the youth entertainment business’ Irish–Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insight into real business practice. 26 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
MTV has become a cultural global icon but behind it getting that status that there was obviously a lot of interesting negotiation as this book makes clear. It's a fascinating read - both about MTV, the TV business in general and with rock `n roll stories thrown in to keep it interesting. There are some pretty good lessons I guess for anyone trying to set up a business. There are also some funny stories in there - some of the stories about the European Music Awards and other awards insightful and pretty amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rock-solid message for us all 21 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book makes some very timely, perhaps priceless points about doing business in what is increasingly not just an international marketplace for just about any kind of medium to large business, but a global one. It's also an engaging first person narrative that makes you feel warmly intimate with the author and his journey from early, tentative career moments transitioning from the military world to media and on to greater challenges at MTV Europe. Through his eyes we see the world shrinking rapidly from a labyrinth of walled off nations and provinces on both sides of an iron curtain to a series of big opportunities to unite cultures and ideals.. WITHOUT being the American imperialist big bad wolf of lore. And you get to learn the lessons with him, through mistakes, bad luck, lots of cultural mutual incomprehensions, and, finally, the breakthroughs that gives you an almost high-five impulse in sharing his hard-won triumphs in our now quickeningly ever-more complex digital world of communications.

On top of all that and the colourful scenery and characters that energise the whole saga, this book branded me with a message that we can use in every aspect of life, professional, personal, public, private, etc: In the end it's not your specific education, your privilege, your luck, your looks, your resources or even your drive that determine your succes: it's your attitude. The great news is that this factor is the one that costs you nothing and over which you have all the control. Roedy's positive, authoritative, but humble and generous attitude to work and life, clearly evoked in these pages, is an inspiration to take and keep regardless of whether your aims are executive or just personal. 'Winning' should not be a zero-sum event; it's about spreading good energy with intent, and if you want to know just how that's done, nuances and all, see and feel the whole process in the delightful experience of reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Makes Business Rock by Bill Roedy 11 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
If you read one business related book this summer - make it "What makes business rock." It is a captivating read which engagingly charts the phenomenal expansion of MTV, globally. The business lessons for entrepreneurs and those in the corporate world are live and compelling, always relevant and never tedious. Even more significant are the life stories, the desire and ability to galvanise people and nations to make a difference to the big social themes such as Aids. It is also historically relevant and an insight into how business and an entrepreneurial approach need to adapt dynamically to changing local and global shifts. Bill Roedy is a phenomenon, a true force of nature, but this book never falls into the trap of being about one man and what he achieved. Finally, unlike so many business tomes, it is it is tremendously funny - you will laugh out loud at the stories about lots of famous stars. It is show business, after all!

Nothing of insight or interest here. Move along, people. Just a very self-serving, self-aggrandizing puff piece. Not sure what was the point

5.0 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS! 16 May 2011
By Peggy Behar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Just sent this book as a gift to someone and had no idea of the reaction I would get. He absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down. He found the coverage of recent political events in Europe fascinating as well as the development of cable television. He told me it was told with warmth and humor and loved the inside look at some of the great artists of the last decade. He is recommending it to all his friends. He said it is a great read and unlike anything he has read recently.

This would be a terrific father's day gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Engaging Tale of Global Connection 28 May 2011
By Bruce Peltier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is book is a remarkable and engaging memoir of a unique career in global entertainment. It is brimming with the love that Bill Roedy feels for television, music, young people around the world, and the challenges he took on as he built a global information network. It is a fun and compelling story, well-told. Roedy shares the wisdom accrued from two decades of hard work and grinding travel, beginning with a brief stint as a cable installer and evolving to meetings with Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, even the Dalai Lama. Along the way he (inadvertently) took on the Pope. His guiding principles are pretty simple--concepts that are available to all of us--and he provides interesting examples of how effectively they worked when he put them into practice. The book provides authentic and credible support for those seeking to bring creative leadership to perplexing business challenges. He was able to break the conventional rules with integrity, and his relentless energy is a good model for young entrepreneurs. He describes mistakes along with successes. Chapter 8 ("Where Do We Go from Here?") is a concise summary of the current situation in entertainment media; a must-read for anyone interested in business strategy in that arena. He summarizes the evolution of cable television (he was there), and lays out the challenges ahead for entertainment executives aspiring to follow in his footsteps.

Roedy writes compellingly about his struggle with a timely and challenging issue: What is the proper role of a powerful corporation when it comes to public service? He used MTVs networks to make a positive impact on several wrenching issues that face young people in third world countries, while keeping his eye on his responsibility to shareholders and the brand.

This is certainly one of the best books of this genre.

If you learn one thing about this book it is to never give up, keep trying until you succeed and adapt to your local audience . It helps if one of your backer is Viacom. It is fun to read. You learn about the inner working of MTV and how it grew internationally.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best 4 Feb 2013

This is the very best history of the explosive spread of American/British Rock music in the world. It is a riveting read for anyone interested in the exponential growth of Rock music through the inventive ingenuity of Bill Roedy.
2.0 out of 5 stars Too much puffery 20 Oct 2011
By Randall Blair - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author is obviously successful and tells us that over and over. It's full of details on how great he is and very short on any useful information about the growth of a network. Very tiresome to get constant references to his military career. I doubt I can finish it.
