"Flamboyant colors, zany perspectives and a neatly circular tale lead, with satisfying inevitability, to a happy outcome for all but the thieves." -"Washington"" Post
""The appealing and brightly colored collage illustrations, rhyming text, and assorted animal sounds make it a natural for individual or group readalouds."--"Booklist
""An excellent read-aloud or lap book, it's full of slapstick action, animal noises, and repeated phrases that invite participation. Donaldson's rhymed verse is both rhythmic and skillfully executed." --"Publishers Weekly," STARRED review
"""Low on menace and high on clever silliness, this highly readable rhyming tale will have young listeners participating in the delivery of these unexpected variations on animal sounds and examining the last scene." --"Kirkus Reviews"

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good Book 10 stars! 18 April 2009
By debbie8355 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book is excellent in every way. The cover is beautifully illustrated and very tactile with a yellow, very glittery raised design. This raised glittery theme is continued through the book with a hidden ladybird and sometimes her trail on each page. Young children can 'feel' as well as look for the ladybird which is cleverly much larger on some pages than others. The illustrations inside are outstanding too.
The story inside is very clever and very entertaining of how some farmyard animals plus the ladybird outwit some thieves trying to steal the farmers prized cow.
It is a very, very entertaining tale and lots of opportunity to make animal noises and laugh at the story.
Exceptionally good and well worth adding to your young childrens book collection. I would say it's suited to preschool and key stage one children. My 7 and 4 year old loved it.
Wholeheartedly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent fun for children and parents 11 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
The key to childrens books for me is to make them enjoyable for the parents as well. Children know if you are taking an interest or just going through the motions - and this is one of my favourites. It is interesting, has repetition for the child to recognise, has a tactile element, a bit of where's wally (ie spot the ladybird on the page) and humour - hefty hugh and lanky len are the baddies - so I am pleased when this one gets picked out to be read.
