More About the Author

Julia Donaldson, the 2011-2013 Children's Laureate, is the outrageously talented, prize-winning author of the world's most-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and What the Ladybird Heard.

The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is now a children's classic and publishing phenomenon; celebrating 15 years in 2014, selling over 3 million copies worldwide, was voted Great Britain's favourite bedtime story on BBC Radio 2 and was adapted and broadcast as an animation on BBC 1 on Christmas Day 2009. The Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom are now also films, with Room on the Broom shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2014. Julia Donaldson's most recent books with Axel Scheffler include Superworm (2012), Highway Rat (2011), Tabby McTat (2010), Stick Man (2009) and Tiddler (2008).

Julia Donaldson has also published work with David Roberts, Nick Sharratt, Emily Gravett, Rebecca Cobb, and Lydia Monks. Her collaboration with Lydia Monks began in 2003, with the first collection of Princess Mirror-Belle stories. The fabulously glittery Sugarlump and the Unicorn is their sixth, and most recent, picture book collaboration. She also writes poems, plays, songs and fiction for older children and, together with her husband Malcolm, has performed her wonderful stage shows all over the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good Book 10 stars! 18 April 2009
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book is excellent in every way. The cover is beautifully illustrated and very tactile with a yellow, very glittery raised design. This raised glittery theme is continued through the book with a hidden ladybird and sometimes her trail on each page. Young children can 'feel' as well as look for the ladybird which is cleverly much larger on some pages than others. The illustrations inside are outstanding too.
The story inside is very clever and very entertaining of how some farmyard animals plus the ladybird outwit some thieves trying to steal the farmers prized cow.
It is a very, very entertaining tale and lots of opportunity to make animal noises and laugh at the story.
Exceptionally good and well worth adding to your young childrens book collection. I would say it's suited to preschool and key stage one children. My 7 and 4 year old loved it.
Wholeheartedly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, colourful and beautifully written 23 Sep 2012

Format:Board book
Julia Donaldson is a master of children's literature. The language in this book has a compelling rhyme and rhythm. On top that the animal noises are great fun to do and the pictures are bright and engaging. Absolutely top notch for children from about 18 months onwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Classic from Julia Donaldson 6 July 2012
Format:Board book
We have lots of Julia Donaldson books in our house and they are huge favourites. This is another classic tale which is already a favourite. It has a great story with the animals working together to a plan by the Ladybird, who may never say a word but certainly listens carefully, to outwit 2 thieves - Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len. Lots of opportunities for animal noises which are always popular. The illustrations are beautiful and very detailed. There is also the added factor of raised glitter which my children at least like to follow with their finger making the book even more interactive (although it does sometimes slow down the actual telling of the tale). A lovely story highly recommended.
