About the Author
Susan Coolidge (1835-1905) was born Sarah Chauncey Woolsey in Ohio, USA. She worked as a nurse during the American Civil War, after which she started to write. She is best known for her classic children's novel What Katy Did , which was modelled on her own family, and its four sequels: What Katy Did at School, What Katy Did Next, Clover and In the High Valley.

Katy Carr is a twelve year-old girl, a tomboy who lives in a small house with her father, aunt and five younger brothers and sisters. At first, the book appears to be about growing up; with the plays, antics and misadventures of Katy, her siblings and friend Cecy Hall. The cheerful tone present early in the story is swiftly replaced about halfway through after a tragic incident which makes the book take a darker outlook and it becomes a nail-biting page turner.
Well-written with great supporting characters including severe yet kindly Aunt Izzie, the siblings: Clover, Elsie, Dorry, John and Phil, each with a unique personality and my favourite character, the Carr children's sickly yet wise and patient Cousin Helen.
If you have read and enjoyed similar books such as Little Women or Anne of Green Gables, you should give this a try.
A light read of about 200 pages with a good message to it - but parents buying this book for a child should read it first and then decide for themselves whether their child will be able to cope with the slightly dark, melancholy and sad second half.

A basic edition, with clear print. This old-fashioned story was given to me by my mother, I bought this copy for my grand daughter. It still weaves its charm, in spite of the rather cloying "religion".

Beautifully written, touching story.

My nine year old daughter was describing the plot and was moved to tears. A young girl learns to respect her sibling's views and become less 'bossy'....my daughter is the eldest of three children. She tries to be resposible and help...but sometimes crosses over into very bossy territory. She is very sensitive to this, and feels terrible when she does...and this book brought her to tears...it was important for her to read that she is not alone with the things she deals with.

My grandmother gave me this book when I was a child and I have loved it ever since. Beautiful tale told in a realistic, heart-warming way.
