3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly interesting Metafilm. 4 May 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
If you like The Player and Swimming With Sharks then you might like What Just Happened. It's not exactly gripping, but tells the story of a movie producer (De Niro) trying to juggle all these balls in the air with a film that needs a happy ending with an unwilling director (Michael Wincott), a film about to be pulled from production because a star (Bruce Willis) is unwilling to shave for the starring role, two ex-wives, one he's trying to get back together with, and a teenage daughter. It's subtle rather than sledge-hammer, and as such rather downplays its own personal nightmare. It's worth a watch, but don't expect anything like the cutting wit of Swimming With Sharks or the cleverness of the Player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shave That Beard! 12 Aug 2011
What Just Happened is Hollywood cinema at its absolute brilliant best!Director/Producer Barry Levinson has in my opinion made the best picture of his celebrated career with this sharp as a knife hilarious black comedy.
The movie flows effortlessly from scene to scene & is a true joy to watch.
A truly magnificent cast produce some of there finest perforances in years especially Robert De Niro who plays Ben & gives the picture its heartbeat.
Bruce Willis(Hilarious),Sean Penn,Robin Wright Penn,Kristen Stewart,John Turturro,Stanley Tucci & Catherine Keener are all excellent in a stellar cast.
Special praise has to be reserved for Michael Wincott who plays the Director in the movie & is quite simply outstanding in this brilliant movie.
Thanks to cast & crew for making this superb picture..Buy it now folks its the sharpest black comedy in many a year & a true gem of a film.
If your a fan of movies like Sideways/Swingers/Save The Tiger to name but a few then you will love this brilliant piece of cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars Standout comedy 14 May 2013
I'm difficult to please when it comes to comedy films, because usually they aren't actually funny but this is a standout comedy film as far as I'm concerned. It's not a typical comedy film, no, which is why it's not liked by some people no doubt, the humour is subtle, there are no 'laugh now' prompts, you get the strand of humour or you don't, personally the film cracked me up and I laughed frequently throughout. It must be even more of a hoot if you know the film industry firsthand but even as an outsider I found it hilarious. Definitely one I'll want to see again, probably even buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars What just happened? ... a bit of genius 5 Dec 2009
Hopefully , if you are a clever cinephile you'll ignore all those negative remarks and move on-after all; it's a Barry Levinson film, whose illustrious career encompasses: Diner, The Natural, Wag the Dog, The Perfect Storm etc.,etc.,etc. This is a wonderful satire about Hollywood life and all the trimmings that are it's constant peripheral; the divorces, the neuroses, the sycophants, the divas- the characterizations are perfectly executed and masterfully acted by a fabulous cast. Deniro's producer character is the audiences point of view as he fumbles from one head-case to the next with brilliant hilarity. A great little celluloid reminder to those who have closed that door to Show-biz and a must watch for those that have 'stars in their eyes'and that are intelligent enough to smell the irony- a tour de force!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss What Just Happened 15 Aug 2009
Wow. If you only watched movies based on reviews, chances are you have spent a few months avoiding Barry Levinson's latest, WHAT JUST HAPPENED.

What are you missing?

- A great performance from Robert De Niro: That alone should make this movie worth watching for many people. De Niro has been a bit hit-and-miss with his movie choices lately, but as Hollywood producer Ben, De Niro is simply terrific. In ways both obvious and subtle, he manages to convey many layers of emotion as his character tries to bridge the worlds of creativity and commerce--even as he tries to come to terms with all the compromises, mistakes and challenges that have left him with two ex-wives and a lot of bills to pay. The fact that his two current projects are both collapsing around him only adds to the pressure. But, touchingly, the thing he seems to care most about is that his most recent wife (Robin Wright) is reupholstering his favorite (but no longer his) sofa.

- A great insider view of the movie industry: Sure, it's been done before. But I enjoyed this movie more than "The Player" and found it more compelling and fun than "Entourage.". Catherine Keener as the steely, numbers-oriented studio head? Superb. Michael Wincott as the British director who's both a recovering addict and an unyielding creative primadonna? Nailed it. Stanley Tucci as the screenwriter (and romantic rival) whose next movie is about a florist? Fantastic. John Turturro as the agent who's too scared to talk to his high-powered clients. Hilarious. Robin Wright Penn as the ex-wife who wants to move on but never can say goodbye? Heart-achingly believable. Kristin Stewart as the angst-ridden teen who may have an inappropriate lover? You know she can play that role, "Twilight" fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated by a mile 24 May 2009
I think the other reviewers have missed the point. This is an acting tour de force from De Niro and one of his best outings in recent times. Its not a laugh-out-loud show but rather a sublime comedy of manners which tickles Tinseltown's underbelly in some clever ways. Great support from Stanley Tucci and Bruce Willis amongst many others but De Niro's throwaway turn does everything by doing seemingly nothing and is highly recommended by this reviewer.
