Pre-WAR band makes good with the funk 11 July 2003
By Scott Woods - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
What you need to know is that Senor Soul was an early incarnation of War, a band known for keeping the funk pretty raw on every production count. This is a roots-based funky record, its tracks almost solely instrumental and without the polish of the 70s quite hitting it yet...a lot like a smaller combo version of some instrumental James Brown/JBs stuff. Good stuff for those REAL old heads or when you want to put something on and go back. A number of instrumental versions of classic Motown-era stuff, too ("Uptight (Everything's Alright)", "It's Your Thing", etc.).
All in all a great funk (or pre-funk record if you want to be specific), but not for people who only know Parliament or Funkadelic. This one's got a heavy Latin/L.A. vibe, so it's more
in line with early Santana than anything else.

Too funky, too groovy 22 Aug. 2008
By Grant Green - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The only thing that will bum you about this album is that there isnt more Senor Soul albums about....they morphed into the very popular band WAR, and this is the precursor....I really shouldnt let on, i mean i want this album all to myself! Too good, and thankyou to whoever is behind keeping it in circulation. If you like early 70's funk like The Meters, Herbie Hancocks Headhunters, James Brown i rekon you will like this album. There is lots of tracks on it too. Some tracks have some sort of vocals, but many of the tracks are instrumental...it definately has that Latin feel/groove about it, but it is SPACIOUS and groovy, not busy and over produced. One thing you cant pinpoint with this recording is how FUN it is, these guys were loving it!

for me, anytime you put a flute into some good ole latin tinged funky stuff, you got me. i am weak for that mess!!!! great tracks, really funky, but not for those who like THE OBVIOUS if ya dig me. if you are into that real rare stuff, this is yo butta, baby!!!! definitely check this thing out.
Senor Soul - What It Is, y'all (The Best Of Senor Soul) 28 Dec. 2011
By DJ Baltimore Boogie Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Any connoisseur of 60's soul instrumentals would be remiss in not acquiring the easily forgotten "Pata Pata" that was released as a 7"-45 rpm...or it's b-side - "Poquito Soul", both included on this recording. I would venture to say that these two items were at least equal - if not superior - to any other instrumental track featured on the urban charts in the 60's. Even most "Northern Soul" advocates have allowed this version of "Pata Pata" to slip through their fingers. I consider that track as having set the trend for what was to be later categorized as "Afrofunk"...in spite of the fact that its flavor was decidedly Latin-tinged. And the smooth and classy "Poquito Soul" compares favorably with the equaly rare version by One G Plus Three. The author of "Poquito Soul" - Charles Miller - was to later become an original member of War...and you can hear it in the flavor. The track "Don't Lay Your Funky Trip On Me" was a collaboration between "(Papa D.) Allen, Thomas Sylvester/Charles Miller/Harold Brown/Howard Scott/Lee Oskar/Lonnie Jordan/Morris Dickerson"...that's War, ladies and gentlemen. And who knows...you just might like some of the other tracks also.
